Paul J. Spain Oct 12 2000 12:00AM Paul J. "Cracker" Spain, 84, DeWitt, and formerly of Petersville, died Tuesday at DeWitt Community Hospital. Mass of Christian burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Petersville with the Rev. H. Robert Harness and the Rev. Ed Botkin officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. today at Schultz Funeral Home in DeWitt. A rosary will be recited at 4 p.m. today and a scripture service will be at 8 p.m. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Vince Spain, Jeff Dunlavey, Joel Dunlavey, Michael Spain, Jason Spain, Jesse Spain, Daniel Spain, Jeremy Spain, Tanner Spain and Joey Spain. He was born April 5, 1916, at Petersville to William and Molly Spain. On Feb. 17, 1941, he married Marcella McDonnell at St. Patrick's Villa Nova. She died March 13, 1985. He then married Delores Watters on April 26, 1990, at Our Lady of the River Catholic Church in LeClaire. He farmed near Petersville all his working life, retiring on Nov. 8, 1994. He was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in DeWitt, the Knights of Columbus, the Welton Fire Department, Clinton County Extension Council, and the "Procrastinators." He also organized the Petersville Tractor Pulls for 20 years. Survivors include his wife Delores; his children, Darrell Spain of Lost Nation, Paul Leonard Spain of Coal Valley, Ill., Ruthie Spain of DeWitt, Larry Spain and Terry Spain of Petersville, Steve "Woody" Spain of Delmar and Mrs. Rita (Pat) Dunlavey of Charlotte; step-children, Mrs. Mary Therese (Dave) Roling and Joe Watters of Charlotte, Joann Rehr of Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Mary Catherine (Dan) Schlader of Lynchburg, Va., Mrs. Mary Ellen (Dave) Plambeck of LeClaire, Mrs. Mary Jane (John) Vance of Delmar, Mrs. Mary Beth (Larry) Butt of Clinton, Mrs. Mary Lou (Brian) Finnicum of Camanche, Mrs. Mary Colleen (Larry) Bartels of Maquoketa; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 27 step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by five brothers, two sisters, his first wife and a granddaughter. Death date: Oct. 10, 2000. The funeral was conducted Friday morning in Immaculate Conception Church, Petersville, with the Rev. Edward Dokin officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Marcella McDonnell was born Dec. 26, 1913, at Villa Nova to John and Ella Laughlin McDonnell. She and Paul M. Spain were married Feb. 17, 1941, at Villa Nova. They farmed near Petersville. Mrs. Spain taught in the rural schools for three years. Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Ruth Spain of DeWitt and Mrs. Pat (Rita) Dunlavey of Goose Lake; five sons, Terry and Larry of Petersville, Darrell of Lost Nation, Paul of Moline, Ill., and Steve of Delmar; 10 grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. A rose (Geraldine) Spain of Delmar, Clarita McDonnell of Charlotte and Mrs. Delores Hale of Iowa City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter.
