Ronald L. Spain, 69, of rural Goose Lake, died Friday at University Hospitals, Iowa City. The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, with the Rev. Timothy Sheedy, Assumption Catholic Church, Charlotte, officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today in Blazek-Hanrahan Funeral Home, DeWitt, with a 7:30 p.m. parish rosary. Burial will be in Immaculate Conception Church Cemetery. Mr. Spain was born Sept. 12, 1918, in Petersville, to William J. and Mary McGarry Spain. He married Mary H. DeVine, Feb. 3, 1948 in DeWitt. He farmed in the rural Goose Lake area, was an Army veteran of World War II, a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Villa Nova; the DeWitt Eugene McManus American Legion Post No. 238, Knight of Columbus; Clinton County Farm Bureau and the Clinton County Cattleman's Association. Survivors include his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Michael (Mary Kay) McManus of DeWitt, Mrs. David (Jo) Hanson of Rochester, Minn., Mrs. Tom (Barb) Skoff of Charlotte, and Helene Spain of Charleston, S.C.; four sons, Bob of Chillicothe, Ill., Bill and Jim, both of Charlotte, and Perry of Bryant; 18 grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Vivian Goodall, of Delmar; and a brother, Paul of Charlotte. She was born November 11, 1923 in Lost Nation, IA, the daughter of Pierre and Kathleen (Burnett) DeVine. On February 3, 1948, Mary was united in marriage to Ronald Spain in DeWitt. They farmed in rural Clinton County. Early in life she had worked for the Rock Island Arsenal and later at DeWitt Bank & Trust Company. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, DeWitt and the Altar & Rosary Society. Mary enjoyed her neighborhood card club, spending many hours at the riverboat casino and watching the Chicago Cubs and Bears. Survivors include her children, Mary Kay (Mike) McManus, DeWitt; Bob Spain, DeWitt; Bill (Chris) Spain, Charlotte; JoEllen (David) Hanson, Rochester, Minnesota; Barbara Ann (Tom) Skoff, Sugar Creek and Perry (Julene) Spain, Goose Lake, son-in-law, Dave Cook, Bryant.
