Kentucky Post, The (Covington, KY) Date: December 13, 2005 Edition: Kentucky Page: A8 Patricia Gieske known for acts of kindness Lives remembered Hosted orphans, students EDGEWOOD - Every Christmas, Patricia Jill Gieske, a secretary in the department of nursing at Thomas More College, opened her home to orphans from Catholic Charities or students who had no family near. Her own children knew there would be extra place settings at the table, extra gifts under the tree, extra people to embrace. It was as traditional as the eggnog and the mistletoe. Christmas will be difficult for the Gieske family this year. Mrs. Gieske died Monday at her Edgewood home surrounded by her children; she had been diagnosed with stomach cancer three years ago. She was 70. Mrs. Gieske spent her adult life doing for others. "She took care of a family one time that had a fire at their house," said her daughter Monica Northcutt of Elsmere. "She volunteered to read to kids down at the women's shelter every week. She baby-sat neighborhood kids after school whose moms worked. She did that for free. We just grew up always having beyond the seven of us around for the holidays - whether they were from the orphanage or Thomas More students who didn't have any families locally - people that had nowhere else to go." Mrrs. Gieske was born Patricia Jill Jacobs in Des Moines, Iowa. Her mother died when she was 1 year old and her father placed her in an orphanage, where she lived until she was 7. A third cousin from Cincinnati, Miriam Crouse, and her husband, Roy, a Kroger Co. executive, adopted her. She grew up in Hyde Park. Those early experiences helped shape her life. She would maintain compassion for orphans and those who weren't near their families. And since she was an only child in the Crouse household, she desired to have a large family. She married Henry C. Gieske months after her high school graduation. They adopted three children before she bore four of her own. Despite having her hands full raising seven children, Mrs. Gieske found time to volunteer for the Edgewood Life Squad and at St. Pius School in Edgewood, where she was president of the Parent Teacher Guild. She drove a boy who had no transportation to Redwood School. She provided hot meals to elderly neighbors. She took in an infant after his mother died of cancer. When her youngest child entered high school, she went to work for Thomas More College, where she was a surrogate mother to the students. "She is a legend at the school," said her son-in-law, Joe Shields of Park Hills. "She touched all from students to teachers with her kindness." In addition to her daughter, Monica, survivors include her husband, daughters, Mimi Pence of Ludlow and Jill Shields of Park Hills; sons, Michael Gieske of Richwood, David Gieske of Erlanger, Scott Gieske of Boston and Stephen Gieske of Fort Thomas; and 11 grandchildren. Visitation is 9:30 a.m. today, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at noon at St. Pius X Church, 348 Dudley Road in Edgewood. Entombment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
