A. JOE KELLY, 80, OF RICHLAND DIES Alois Joseph (A. Joe), 80, of Richland, Iowa died Tues. March 31, at Maplewood Manor, Keota. He had been involved in publishing all his life, including 21 years at the Richland Clarion. He was born May 15, 1906 at Malcolm in Powesheik County, son of John M. and Barbara Nick Kelly. As a young child he moved to Washington, Iowa where he attended St. James Elementary School and graduated from Washington High School in 1923. He attended the State University Of Iowa where he was a student of the late George Gallup in the school of journalism. While still in college he was a member of the Gallup Poll team in Chicago. Kelly published the Batavia News for nine years, then managed several newspapers during WW II, for editors called to service. In 1951 the family purchased the Richland Clarion, which A. Joe and his wife Anita, and children published until his retirement in 1972. After retirement he was "string" corresspondent for several newspapers. He married Anita M. Hamill Aug. 28, 1930. Surviving are his widow; four children, Mrs. Vernon Horras (Jan) of Richland, Mrs Thomas A. Brown (Joyce) Geneseo, New York, Kerry Kelly of Rochester, New York, and Kimbell Kelly of Fairfield, Iowa; seven grandchildren, a sister Winifred Kelly of Washington and a brother, Jerome Kelly of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by five children in infancy, and one son Dennis in 1972 and one sister, Genevieve Ledger of Washington.
