From "The History of Clinton County, Iowa" published 1879 Chicago: Western Historical Company, pages 765-766, Welton Township JEREMIAH DONAGAN, farmer; P.O. De Witt; was born in County Cork, Ireland, he emigrated to Maine in 1836; from Maine he removed to Boston; thence to Rhode Island; then to Connecticut; thence to Chicago and on to California in 1849, where he remained until 1852; he then returned to Ireland, but came back to the United States in March, 1853; he came to Clinton county in the fall of the same year and purchased the farm where he now lives. His wife was Mary Lucey, born in England in 1835; they have 8 children; John, Michael, Jeremiah, Patrick, Mary C., Dennis, Maurice and James; lost one son Edward age 5 years. ------------------ Jeremiah Donegan Died September 29, 1895 Will and Jerry Shannon drove to Welton Tuesday afternoon to attend the funeral of their uncle, Jeremiah Donegan, today at DeWitt. Mr. Donegan was one of the oldest settlers of the county and had reached the age of 80 years. He leaves a wife and seven children. De Witt Observer September 8, 1982 ------------------ Mrs. Jeremiah Donegan Mrs. Jeremiah (Lucey) Donegan died at her home at Davenport the 6th of March of cancer of the stomach, aged 65 years. the remains were brought to the old home and taken to De Witt for burial, Mrs. Donegan was an old and respected resident of this township. She leaves a family of seven children; Michael and John of Eagle Grove, Patrick, Dennis and James of Davenport, Jerry and Mrs. (Mary C.) Showalter of Welton to mourn her loss. They had nine children; John, Michael, Jeremiah Jr., Patrick, Mary C., Dennis, Morris, James and a son Edward born July 4, 1872 and died February 4, 1876. Jeremiah Jr.'s wife Maggie died July 30, 1886 at age 25 years, 4 months, 15 days. Born March 15, 1861. All are buried at St. Josephs cemetery, DeWitt
