''Leo'' Matthews of Columbia City, a former Beaverton resident, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Frederic Roman Catholic Church in St. Helens. He died Wednesday in a Longview, Wash., hospital of complications from leukemia. Mr. Matthews was 76. Born April 14, 1917, on Sauvie Island, he was raised and graduated from high school in St. Helens. As a young man, he began his career as a display sign writer with Sears, Roebuck and Co. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Matthews returned to his job at Sears and continued to work for the store until 1957, when he opened Beaver Sign Co. in Beaverton. He was involved in writing signs and advertising posters for more than 22 years. Mr. Matthews moved to the Columbia City area after his retirement in 1982. He had attended St. Frederic Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Genevieve; his sons, Howard F. of Lompoc, Calif., and Douglas P. of Portland; his daughter, Clara Baker of Seattle; and one grandson. Interment will be at Bayview Cemetery in Warren. The family suggests that remembrances be contributions to the cancer research program of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
