P. Wayne Rose November 18, 1923 - November 14, 2007 SALEM - Peter Wayne Rose was born November 18, 1923 in Yakima, Washington, to S. Parzy Rose and Undine Sarah (Anderson) Rose. He started school at McKinley School in Salem, moved to Silverton in 1930, and graduated in 1941 from Silverton High School. He attended Mt. Angel College and Willamette University, and was a member of Sigma Tau Fraternity, later Sigma Chi. He enlisted in the Navy, and served aboard the USS Jarvis, DD799, from the Aleutians to Northern Japan, where he was involved in the occupation of Japan. After WWII, he returned to Oregon, and was in business with his two brothers in Canby. He married Anne Marie Doerfler on August 3, 1947 in Salem. He graduated from Willamette University in 1949, and then received a commission in the U.S. Army Reserves. His unit was activated in 1950, and served with the 409th ESB at Ft. MacArthur, California. He was stationed at Ft. Sherman and Ft. Davis, while living at Ft. Gulick, Panama Canal Zone. He received a Regular Army Commission, and served with the 45th Recon Battalion at Ft. Clayton C.Z. Assignments included the Armored School, Ft. Knox, Kentucky, he taught ROTC at the University of Washington, with the 4th Infantry Division Ft. Lewis, Washington, Command & General Staff College at Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas, Combat Developments Command at Ft. Lee, Virginia. He served in Taegu and Seoul, Korea, and with the Joint U.S. Military Mission in Ankara, Turkey. He was Battalion Commander of the 502nd Supply & Transport Battalion 2nd Armored Division at Ft. Hood, Texas. He retired from the Army as a Lt. Col. in 1968, and was presented with the Legion of Merit. He brought the family back to Salem, and was a Records Manager for the State Employment Division. After retirement, he and Anne spent many years traveling across the U.S. in their RV, to visit their scattered families, and to research his ancestors. They were charter members of River City Sams. He was a member of Ainsworth Lodge No. 201, Scottish Rite Valley of Salem, and Abou Saad Shrine Temple in Panama City, C.Z. He was a charter member of the Willamette Chapter of Retired Officers, and a member of Republic Chapter Sons of the American Revolution. He was an Elder and Trustee at the First Presbyterian Church. Survivors include his wife, Anne; son, Peter W. Rose II, retired US Army; daughters, Lezlie Anne Kinunen and Julie Marie Thompson; brother, S. Parzy Rose II; grandchildren, Cheri Bennett, Nichole Bigay, Paul and Amy Kinunen, and Jackson and Jeana Thompson; great-granddaughters, Alexis and Sarah Bennett; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his brother, D. Neil Rose. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, November 19 at Westminister Presbyterian Church, in south Salem.
