Matthews Dies Here This Morning William Jackson Matthews, 96, Atlantic retired farmer and resident of Cass county 63 years, died this morning at the Atlantic Memorial hospital, where he had been a patient since Sunday evening. He had been in in his usual health until last Saturday. Mr. Matthews, the son of Alfred B. and Dian Kelley Matthews, was born near August, Ill., Nov. 11, 1855 and grew to manhood in that community. He was married to Nettie Morgan Aug 21, 1879 at Carthage, Ill., and the couple lived near August and later at Hamilton, where he operated a general store. In 1889, they settled on a farm in Edna township, where they lived until retiring to his present home, 905 East Sixth street, in 1913. Mrs. Matthews died April 20, 1943. Mr. Matthews was a member of the Christian church. Surviving are a son, M. E. Matthews of Avoca; three daughters, Mrs. Erma Jorgensen of Stuart, Mrs. Winnie Jorgensen of Fontanelle, and Mrs. Leona Donahoe of Omaha; 25 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews also reared a grandson, Glenn Holaday of West Des Moines, and two nephews, Harold and Herbert Morgan. He was preceded in death by two sons, Fern, who died last June 2, and Willie Matthews; a daughter, Mrs. Ethel Holaday, in 1907, and a nephew, Harold Morgan, in 1942. Funeral services will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Roland funeral home and interment will be in the Reno cemetery south of Cumberland. Matthews, 85, died at 2 o'clock this afternoon at her home, 905 East Sixth street, following a week's illness due to complications incident to old age. Her family was called to her bedside yesterday, three daughters, Mrs. Dan Jorgensen of Stuart, Mrs. Chris Jorgensen of Fontanelle and Mrs. Leone Donahoe of Chicago, and a grandson, Glen M. Holaday of des Moines, arriving Monday, while a granddaughter, Miss Marie Janet Donahoe, came from Chicago this morning. Surviving beside the three daughters ar the husband and two sons, Elza and Fern Matthews of Atlantic. No funeral arrangements have been made
