Marengo Teen Dies In Crash Ashley Derby, 13, daughter of Stuart and Doris Derby, Marengo, was killed Sunday, June 30, when the car she was riding in went off a gravel road and struck a tree in the ditch on the passenger side, according to Iowa County Sheriff Jim Slockett. The 1979 Plymouth, driven by Cassandra Clinton, 21, Marengo, was eastbound at noon at 110th Street four miles north of West Amana. Two-year-old Collette Clinton, Cassandra's daughter, was in child restraint in the back seat. According to a Cedar Rapids Gazette report the three were on their way to the All-Iowa Fair. Cassandra Clinton apparently rounded a slight curve, lost control and went into the North ditch. Ashley was thrown from the car. It has not been determined whether she was wearing a seat belt. Ashley was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, by Lifeguard helicopter, where she was pronounced dead at 1:02 p.m. [See obituary, page 10]. She died Sunday afternoon, June 30, 1996, at St. Luke's Hospital, Cedar Rapids, from injuries suffered in an automobile accident. The Rev. Anthony Conrad officiated at the service. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery, Sigourney. Casket bearers were Leland Morrison, Ronald Morrison, Douglas Morrison, Dallas Derby, Fred Derby and Darrel Derby. Honorary bearers were Matthew Morrison, Andrew Morrison, Mark Morrison, Michael Morrison, Aaron Morrison, Cody Morrison, Jeffrey Derby, Daniel Derby, Christopher Derby, Nicholas Derby, Andrew Derby, Zachary Lee, Jason Lee, Joshua Grimm and Hunter Davis. Memorials may be made to the Marengo Recreation commission or a charity of the donor's choice.. A wake service was held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 2, at the Kloster-Valentine Funeral Home, Marengo. Ashley Danielle Derby was born Feb. 23, 1983, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, the daughter of Stuart and Doris Morrison Derby. She attended Iowa Valley Community Schools, where she was on the academic honor roll. She would have been in the eighth grade this fall. She enjoyed softball, swimming, jet skiing, vacationing, the outdoors and baby-sitting small children. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Marengo, and St.Mary's Catholic Church, Williamsburg. She was a wonderful girl and was truly loved by her family and all her countless friends.
