October 10, 2006 at North English Cemetery Charlene Hedrick, age 81, died suddenly at her home in North English on Sunday, October 8, 2006. A Celebration of Life Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the Powell Funeral Home in North English with Pastor Ben Wilson officiating. Friends may greet the family on Tuesday October 10th from 5 PM until service time at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the North English Cemetery On Wednesday, October 11, 2006 at 10:00 AM. A memorial fund has been established for The North English First Responders and North English United Methodist Church. Charlene Hedrick was born on October 26, 1924 in North English, IA, the daughter of Charles and Linnie Morey Morrison. She attended school in North English, graduating from High School in 1942. Charlene attended Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, and later earned her degree at William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She taught in rural schools in Iowa County and in North English Elementary. On June 6, 1948, she was united in marriage to Walter Hedrick, Jr at her home in North English. Far a time, the couple made their home in Cedar Rapids where their daughter, Linda, was born. In 1953, the family came back to North English to farm. Later, Charlene returned to teaching in the English Valleys Schools where she taught for 25 years. She taught a total of 34 years. After retiring in 1988, she was busy tutoring, volunteering at school, the library and at the Community Center. Until her health failed, Charlene also enjoyed other hobbies including spending time with her grandsons, reading, and crocheting. She was a member of the North English United Methodist Church. Charlene is survived by her husband, Walter; her daughter Linda (Curt) Schroeder of West Des Moines, IA; grandson Mike (Sarah) Burgraaf and great grandson, Zach of Clive, IA; grandson Colin (Emily) Schroeder of McKinney, TX; and other relatives and friends.
