John Whitworth John Whitworth, 85, died Wednesday, Nov. 29, 2006, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness. Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, First Presbyterian Church, by the Rev George Bishop and Dave Shorten. Burial: Pleasant Hill Cemetery, with military rites. Friends may call at Phillips Funeral Home, Blairstown, from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. John was born Nov. 19, 1921, in Keswick, Iowa to John and Belle (Morrison) Whitworth, and graduated from the Thornburg High School in 1941. During World War II he served his nation in the Army Air Corps. On Oct. 25, 1944, he married Alene Robison in Mountain Home, Idaho. The couple farmed in the Blairstown area for 33 years, retired in 1982 and moved to Blairstown. Alene preceded her husband in death on April 30, 2000. John was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the M.J. Kirby American Legion Post 170 in Blairstown. He is survived by his daughters, Janet (Dave) Shorten of Orem, Utah, and Cathy (Terry) McCool of Maple Grove, Minn.; his grandchildren, Michal, David and Sarajan Shorten and Greg McCool; his brother, Jim (Ellen) Whitworth of Washington state; his sisters, Lucy Lamb of Oskaloosa and Pat Korkenke of Colorado; and his special friend, Joann Becker of Blairstown. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brother, Al Whitworth. In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established. Edith "Alene" Whitworth was born June 21, 1920, in Keota, the daughter of Hamill and Eliza Van Fleet Robison. Alene, as known to family and friends, attended country school and graduated from South English High School with the class of 1938. Alene then worked for Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids for a time before her marriage to John Whitworth on Oct. 25, 1944, in Mountain Home, Idaho. While John was away serving his country during World War II, Alene continued to work for Collins Radio. After John returned from the service, they made their home on a farm near South English for 2 years, before moving to a farm near Blairstown, working together and farming there for 33 years. During that time, Alene worked for the Blairstown Consolidated Schools asa teacher's aide for 17 years. Alene and John retired in 1982, and moved to the home they built in Blairstown. They enjoyed their travels together over the entire United States, including places like Yellowstone Park, the Redwood Forest and many places along the east coast. Alene's health had failed and she had been fighting a courageous battle with cancer for the past few years. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Blairstown.
