Leonard Wilkerson, 75 Funeral services for Leonard L. Wilkerson, 75, North English, were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Powell Funeral Home, North English. He died Friday, Aug. 29, 1997, at Marengo Memorial Hospital following a sudden illness. The Rev. Don Ridenour officiated at the service. Burial with military rites was in the North English Cemetery. Leonard L. Wilkerson was born June 10, 1922, near Keswick, the son of Will Henry and Hattie Morrison Wilkerson. He attended country school and North English High School, graduating in 1940. He married Helen L. Kelley May 28, 1943, in Manchester, Tenn. He served in the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater during World War II. When he returned home, he farmed, worked at Masons Grocery and worked for Neff Plumbing and Heating. He later drove a cream route, worked in Kirkpatrick Feed Mill and sometimes helped his brother at the North English Cleaners. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan and also enjoyed trapping, hunting and fishing. He was a member of the North English Christian Church, the V.F.W. and was a 50-year member of the American Legion. Wilkerson is survived by his wife; two sisters, Frances Littrel, North English, and Dolores Wardenburg, Williamsburg; five brothers, Charles, Norman and Robert, all North English; Clarence, San Antonio, Texas, and Edward, Ottumwa. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Nancy, and one brother, William D. (Dick) and Wanda Seaton Kelley. Her family moved to a farm between Millersburg and North English and Helen attended country schools before graduating from North English High School. She was married to Leonard Lee Wilkerson on May 28, 1943 in Manchester, TN. They made their home in North English where Helen worked several years at the English Valleys Cooperative Creamery and later at Noel Pharmacy. She loved primitive antiques, decorating and redecorating the interior of her home with them. Helen made braided rugs, sewed and enjoyed reading.. Leonard preceded her in death in August 1997. Helen became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in April 2006. She died following a long illness on Saturday, August 9, 2008, at the Care Center. She is survived by a sister Lois Carter of North English and a number of nieces and nephews. Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, an infant daughter Nancy, sisters: Louise Kelley, Thelma Greenlee, Elizabeth Deaver and Lucille Denison. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 12, 2008 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Kirk Statler officiating. Burial will be in t he North English Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 PM to 8 PM on Monday, August 11, 2008 at the funeral home.
