Paul Novotny Dies Suddenly A funeral mass was celebrated for Paul C. Novotny, 55, Monday, Nov. 21 from St. Patrick's Catholic Church at 1 p.m. with Fr. John W. Stark officiating. Mr. Novotny died shortly after 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17, 1977 while driving a pickup truck on South McClellan Street near his home at 204 E. First Street, Tama. The Tama county medical examiner, Dr. C.W. Maplethorpe, said death was of natural causes, apparently a heart attack. Mr. Novotny was alone in his truck, which angled to the side of the street and ran into some bushes and a post before coming to a stop. Damage was minor. Mr. Novotny was employed as a driver by Kenneth McFate but was in his own vehicle. He had not been feeling well for three days prior to his death. Scripture readings were held in the Mason-Hand Funeral chapel at 5:30 p.m. Sunday led by Fr. Stark. Mrs. John Cibula was organist during the mass and floral attendants were Mrs. Joe Rohach, Mrs. Charles Rohach and Mrs Ernest Herink. Mrs. E. Herink and Mrs C. Rohach were also in charge of the mass offerings. Burial was in the Garwin Cemetery, Garwin where the Enright-Schrader Post No. 76 was in charge of military honors and flag folding. Casketbearers were Joe Rohach, Charles Rohach, Ernest Herink, Charles Hanus, Leo Neiman and Joseph Fahling. Mr. Novotny was born February 9, 1922 near Garwin, a son of Louis F. and Emma Kalinay Novotny. He received his education in the rural schools of the Tama and Toledo areas. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, March 16, 1944 at Toledo and served in the Pacific area. He received an honorable discharge April 25, 1946 at Minneapolis. He was a member of the American Legion. August 7, 1951 he was married to Mary Ann Fahling of Tama. Preceding him in death were his parents and a sister. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Debbie Plowman of Tama and a son, Jeff Novotny, stationed with the U.S. Army in California: a grandson, Brent A. Plowman, Tama: two brothers, Sylvester L., Marshalltown; Leo E., Garwin; three sisters; Mrs. Henry (Cecilia) Sieck, Tama; Mrs. James (Marion) Nelson, Waterloo; and Mrs. Richard (Charlotte) Beecher, Traer. Also nieces and nephews.
