Died Sept. 3, 1912 of mitral indufficiency inflammatory rhuematism. Buried villa Nova on Sept. 5, 1912 Funeral Home: Nonnenmacher's DeWitt (No longer there in 1997) Interestingly, the obituary did not appear in the Clinton Herald until Oct. 4, 1912: "Mrs. John Reed, living 6 miles northeast of De Witt passed away at her home Thurs. morning. She leaves to mourn her death her husband and 7 children." DEWITT OBSERVER THURS. MARCH 3, 1938 RITES TODAY AT VILLA NOVA FOR JOHN C. REED, 87 Native of Ireland Dies At Farm Home Near De Witt March 1 Funeral services for John Charles Reed, 87, were held at St. Patrick's church Villa Nova at 0:00 this morning (Thursday) with the Rev. O.F. DeCoursey, officiating. Assisting also in the service were the Rev. R.H. Maher of Grand Mound and the Rev. Edward Taylor of DeWitt. The Villa Nova choir sang with Miss Mary McGuire at the organ. The pallbearers were Albert Marcil, William Reed, James Reed, Ben Hunter, Joe Hunter, Charles Hunter, John Logan and Edward Welch. Interment was made in St. Patrick's cemetery. Mr. Reed died Tues. morning March 1, 1938 at 2:00 at the farm home five miles northeast of DeWitt following an illness of several months. The body was removed to the Hanrahan-Fitzpatrick funeral home of DeWitt and reposed there until this morning. John Charles Reed was born Feb. 14, 1851 in Ireland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. John Reed. In 1878, he was married at Sugar Creek to margaret Bulger, who preceded him in death. He had lived at the late home since 1876. Surviving are 2 sons, William and John; five daughters Mrs. Charles Hunter of DeWitt, Sister mary Gonzaga of Davenport, Mrs. Albert Marcil of Omaha, Neb., Mrs. Thomas Guinan of DeWitt and Miss Carolyn Reed of Omaha, Neb. Attending the services from away were Tom, Will, Elizabeth and Lillian Reed of Lexington, Neb., Sister Mary Gonzaga and companion Mercy Order of Davenport; Mr. and Mrs. Albert Marcil and children, Jeanne and Al Jr., Harry Pfieffer and Miss Carolyn Reed of Omaha, Neb.; Mrs and Mrs. Francis Clementz of Sterling, Ill., Mary Hunter of Iowa City, John Logan, Davenport; Peggy Logan, Clinton; Mr. and Mrs. Tom Maher and Vincent Lawler all of clinton. A genealogist from Clinton Co., Iowa checked for birth records on John C. Reed, John R. Reed, Carrie Reed and Genevieve Reed. Couldn't find any. She noted that birth records were only kept from 1880 and the records were not kept accurately before 1900. The death recordS were only recorded after 1880. She checked up to 1903 for Richard, John C. and Mrs. John, Carrie and Genevieve Reed. John and Adalene Reed are both buried at Villa Nova Cemetery. John R. Reed died Feb. 25, 1976 and Adalene died June 10, 1975. She said that she checked for a week after the death dates for an obit. and could not find any. She was puzzled by this. Thomas Reed, Sr. died at home on March 11, 1861. There was no will. There were guardianship papers for his three children: The value of the estate was $600.00. The children were : Catherine 9, Thomas Jr. 5, and William 3.
