Orange County Register, The (Santa Ana, CA) Date: June 8, 1990 Edition: EVENING Page: B09 Thomas Oehrlein -- Contra Costa public defender A memorial will be held Sunday for Thomas Oehrlein, a veteran public defender in Contra Costa County who is remembered for his quick wit, his love of family and friends, and his devotion to sports. Mr. Oehrlein, 55, died at his Walnut Creek home on Sunday after a two-year struggle with pancreatic cancer. Just two days before his death, he had attended a Cal-Stanford baseball game, and then an Oakland A's game against the New York Yankees, said his friend and co-worker, Jack Funk. "He was a tremendous sports fan, particularly baseball," Funk said Thursday. Mr. Oehrlein, who grew up in Anaheim, "actually converted from being a Dodger fan to a Giants fan." Mr. Oehrlein received his law degree from UC's Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, where he played on the rugby club. After beginning his criminal defense career in the Madera County Public Defender's Office, he was hired in 1976 by the Contra Costa Public Defender's Office, where he worked until he was diagnosed with cancer. Contra Costa Public Defender David Coleman called Mr. Oehrlein "a very important and stalwart member of our office." "I think that many of us best remember his cheerful, upbeat, humorous personality," Coleman said. "In our business, we are not around a lot of happy events. You need a presence like Tom." Another longtime colleague, Ken Dothee of Martinez, said Mr. Oehrlein amazed him with his jokes. "He always had a joke to tell. He would have at least one new one every day, " Dothee said. "He was just a very warm, positive, upbeat fellow." Mr. Oehrlein did not handle a lot of high-profile trials. Instead, his colleagues said, Mr. Oehrlein's strength was in dealing with prosecutors, judges and police officers to get fair deals for his clients. "He really reached out to people. He had a really big heart," Funk said. Outside of work, Mr. Oehrlein followed many sports, including pro baseball and basketball, as well as games at St. Mary's College and Cal. He played on the public defender's coed softball team and was a regular at the Martinez bocce ball courts for two decades. Mr. Oehrlein is survived by his wife, Jennifer, and her two children, Jeanine and Julia Kent, along with his father, Thomas, his sister Maggie and his brother John. The memorial will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Connolly and Taylor funeral chapel in Martinez, with a gathering of friends and family following. The family asks that contributions in his memory be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
