The Clinton Herald Tuesday March 22, 1955 p. 8 Richard W. Welsh, 79, retired DeWitt farmer, died in his home there at 10 a.m. today after a long illness. Friends may call beginning at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at the McGinnis funeral home. Rev. E.A. Cone will lead recitation of the rosary there Thursday at 7:30 p.m. A requiem high mass will be offered in St. Joseph's church at 9:30 a.m. Friday, with burial in St. Joseph's cemetery. Born Oct. 7, 1875, at Petersville, Mr. Welsh was the son of Edward and Katherine Reed Welsh. He attended schools in that vicinity and was married to Estella McDonald Feb. 15, 1904, in St. Martin's church, Emery, S.D. The couple farmed near Petersville for five years, northwest of DeWitt for two years and at their home place near DeWitt for 33 years. They retired and moved to DeWitt 12 years ago. Mr. Welsh was a member of St. Joseph's church, DeWitt. He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last year. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Raymond and Leo, both of DeWitt; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Burke of Chicago; Mrs. Leo Connell of DeWitt; Mrs. H.J. Wenzlick of Bremerton, Wash., and Miss Geraldine Welsh, Panama Canal Zone; two brothers, Frank of Charlotte and James of Davenport, and a sister, Mrs. Mary Smith, Davenport. He was preceded in death by his parents, five sisters and two brothers. Solemn requiem high mass was celebrated at 9:30 a.m. in St. Joseph's Catholic church. Rev. E.A. Cone was celebrand and also gave the sermon. Rev. Thomas Stratman served as deacon; Rev. John W. Schmitz, Welton, sub-deacon, Rev. Harold O'Connor, Lost Nation; as master of ceremonies. Burial was in St. Joseph's cemetery, with Father Stratman officiating at the grave. Pallbearers included M.F. Hines, W.E. Spain, Carl Krukow, Sr., E.J. Green, Lee Barber and William Reed. She had been in poor health the past year. Friends may call after 7:30 tonight at the McGinnis funeral home. Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the funeral home by Rev. E.A. Cone. The former Estella Katherine McDonald was born Aug. 4, 1881 at Lanesboro, Minn., to the late Patrick and Mary Ellen Crowley McDonald. She was educated in schools there and taught in Emery S.D., where she was married Feb. 15, 1904, to Richard Welsh. They farmed five years at Petersville, on the home place northwest of DeWitt for 33 years and retired 12 years to DeWitt. They observed their golden wedding anniversary last year and he died March 22, 1955. Surviving are two sons, Raymond of Grand Mound and Leo of DeWitt; four daughters, Mrs. Alice Burke of Chicago, Mrs. Leo (Estella) Connell of DeWitt, Mrs. H.J. (Evangelina) Wenzlick of Bremerton, Wash. and Geraldine of Iowa City; 16 grandchildren; one brother, Frank of Hollywood, Calif., and three sisters, Mrs. Helen Curtin of Emery, S.D., Mrs. Susie McMaster of Alexandria, S.D. and Mrs. Mary McDonnell of Hollywood. Obituaries list by Michael Kearney 1/25/2002. ------------------------- The Clinton Herald Wednesday February 17, 1954 p. 20 (with photo) Mr. and Mrs. Richard Welsh of DeWitt celebrated their golden wedding anniversary Monday with many relatives and friends calling at their home during the afternoon and evening. Although Mr. Welsh has been seriously ill and has been a patient at the Riverdale lodge nursing home, Bettendorf, for sometime, he was able to spend the day at home. A high mass in observance of the anniversary was celebrated Monday morning in St. Joseph's Catholic church, DeWitt, by Rev. E.A. Cone. Both Father Cone and Rev. Thomas Stratman, assistant pastor, were among the callers at the Welsh home later in the day. The couple received many flowers, gifts and congratulatory cards. Colored motion pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Welsh and of the guests present at the time were taken by Mr. and Mrs. Leo Farber. Refreshments were served to the callers with a wedding anniversary cake and other decorations in gold and white. Towns represented were Clinton, Davenport, Long Grove, Grand Mound, Welton, Delmar and Charlotte in addition to many from DeWitt. Four of their six children were able to be present, including Raymond and Leo of DeWitt, Mrs. Alice Burke of Chicago and Mrs. Leo Connell of Delmar. The other two, Mrs. H.J. Wenzlick of Bremerton, Wash., and Miss Geraldine Welsh, stationed in Tripoli, were unable to attend the celebration. Attendants at the wedding 50 years ago, Mrs. Charles McMaster of Alexandria, S.D., and James J. Welsh of Davenport, also could not be present, but both telephoned their congratulations during the day. Estella McDonnell and Richard W. Welsh were married Feb. 15, 1904, at St. Martin's Catholic chruch, Emery, S.D. They farmed near Petersville for five years and north of DeWitt two years. For about 33 years they lived on the home place northwest of DeWitt, retiring and moving to town 10 years ago.
