Scott family history This material came from a "History of the Scott's" by Sylvester Scott who was a first cousin of Avesta Scott. He completed it in 1948. The Scott family is very rich with early American history. It started in this country when Alexander I came to America. He was born in southeast England about 1698, and he died in 1751, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia, in Augusta county. Augusta county took in the area that is now known as West Virginia and part of Pennsylvania. Alexander Scott had 8 children, 5 boys and three girls. The youngest son, David was a Captain in the Army during the Revolutionary War. Our direct ancestor was the seventh child and his name was Benjamin. Benjamin and his wife "Mary" had a large plantation on Looney creek in Hardy county Virginia. They had eight children listed in the will dated May, 1788. Their third child was Alexander (1760-1844) and his wife's name was Mary, and they had seven children. I don't have very much information about Alexander Sr. He inherited land in 1790, under the terms of his fathers will. He must have moved shortly after this date, as Alexander Jr. was born in Kentucky in 1792. This family moved to near Dayton, Ohio, in 1802. Alexander Jr's. older brother, John, got religion at a young age and became a minister. It rubbed off onto Alexander Jr. as he became very religious and was an "exhorter" in the church. These boys grew to manhood in Kentucky, and they lived in Delaware county, Indiana before coming to Cass county in 1828. They were among the first settlers there. In the fall of 1833, Alexander Jr. moved to Burnettesville and spent the rest of his life in this area. Alexander Jr. was in the war of 1812, having enlisted three times and was drafted once. Alexander Jr. married Margaret Magrew in 1817 and she died that same year, he then married Unity Watt in 1820. Miss Watt was born in North Carolina and was raised at Eaton Ohio. Her family, later moved to Cass county, Indiana and then to Dayton, Ohio, where William Watt died. They had a family of nine chidren, Caleb, the oldest was a doctor. He had 16 children from 3 different wives and lived all his life in this same area. Our ancestor Elisha was the second child in this family. There was very little about him in the Scott history.
