HELEN MAE FLANDER (Mrs. Charles Sheetz) Obit 1924 - 2000 Helen Mae Sheetz ,76, of Sigourney, died Fri., Nov. 17, 2000, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. She was born June 28, 1924 to Leo John and Loretta Catherine Shannon Flander near Keswick. She attended rural schools and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1941. She married Charles Sheetz on May 11, 1944, at St. Elizabeth Rectory in Harper. She taught rural school for 18 years and worked for the Sigourney News-Review for 15 years. She was a member of the ladies V.F.W Auxiliary Lacey Kerr Post 2308 since 1948 and had served as treasurer for 32 years. She was president of the 4th district for three terms and was state president from 1961-1962. She was president of the Keokuk County Iowa Retired Teachers for four years and president of Sigourney Women's Club from 1992-1994. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #19 and the Friendly 16 Club. She is survived by two sons, Michael (Mickey) Sheetz of Popular Grove, Ill. and Mark Alan Sheetz of Sigourney; four grandsons; two granddaughters; two great-granddaughters; a sister, Lavera Bruns of Sigourney; and a brother, Leonard Flander of Winterset. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles on Aug. 9, 1990; her parents and two brothers, Eugene and Mervin Flander. Services were held Nov. 20 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. He was born April 7, 1923, near Ollie to Alfred and Veronica Kiefer Sheetz. He married Helen Flander on May 11, 1944, at Harper. He served in the Army during World War II, owned an operated the Texaco service statino and tank wagon from 1946 to 1953 adn worked at the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of America for 32 years, retiring in 1985. He was a life member of the Lacy Kerr VFW Post No. 2308, a member of American Legion Post No. 19 and Elks Lodge No. 1192 of Fairfield. He is survived by his wife, Helen; his mother, Veronica of Sigourney; two sons, Michael ``Mickey'' of Bowlingbrook, Ill., and Mark of Nederland, Texas; a brother, Horace of Fairfield; six grandchildren; and two stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; a brother, William; and a sister, Annabella Fisher. The service will be 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Holm Funeral Home in Sigourney, the Rev. Darvin Pierce officiating. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today. Memorials may be made to the cancer aid and research fund of the VFW Ladies Auxilary. From a newspaper clipping, newspaper unknown Sheetz Family Visits in Wyoming Mrs. Charles Sheetz and Kyle Sheetz of Sigourney and M. R. "Mickey" Sheetz of Bolingbrook, Ill., drove to Pine Bluffs, Wyo. on August 31. The met Mark Sheetz of Nederland, Tex. in Cheyenne on Sept. 1. They all drove to Casper, Wyo. where they were overnight guests in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Horter. On Sunday they drove to Rawlins, Wyo. and visited Mr. and Mrs. Jim Bland and Mr. and Mrs. Walter Koester. Then they drove into Medicine Bow National forest in the Snowy Range area. They returned to Sigourney September 3. Mark Sheetz flew back to Texas from Cheyenne Monday afternoon and Mickey Sheetz returned home Tuesday. From a newspaper clipping, newspaper unknown, 1990.
