Harry M. Smith Harry M. Smith, 77, retired De Witt mail carrier died at 9:00 p.m. Friday in De Witt Community Hospital, where he had been a patient six weeks. Friends may call after 7:00 tonight at the Hanrahan Funeral Home where the rosary will be led by Rev A. B. Cone at 8:00 p.m. Sunday and recited by Archbishop Hennessey Council of Knight's of Columbus at 8:30. Requiem Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic church by Father Cone. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery. Mr. Smith was born July 31, 1877 in De Witt to the late Sylvester and Mary Nicholas Smith. He attended De Witt public school. On October 30, 1901 he was married in De Witt to Frances Shannon, who died October 24, 1949. He was a rural mail carrier from 1901 to 1934 when he retired. He was also a member 50 years of Archbishop Hennessey's council of KC's Surviving are a son, Herbert L. of De Witt, and three grandchildren. One daughter, Lois McDonald, also preceded him in death. The body reposes in the Hanrahan Funeral Home. Last rites will be held at 9:00 a.m. Thursday in St. Josephs church. The Rev. John Moriarty will officiate and burial in St. Joseph's cemetery. Frances Shannon, daughter of the late Patrick and Julia Shannon, was born April 17, 1879 at Center Grove. She was educated in the Clinton schools and October 31, 1901 was married to Harry M. Smith in St. Joseph's Catholic church in De Witt. Until her health failed, she was an active member of St. Joseph's parish, serving in the St. Veronica league and the Altar and Rosary Society. She was the last of her family, being preceded in death by five sisters and six brothers. Surviving are her husband, one son, Herbert L. of De Witt, three grandchildren. In addition to her parents, her brothers and sisters, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Ambrose (Lois) McDonald. Clinton Herald October 25, 1949 Mrs Ambrose McDonald Mrs. McDonald, 38, died Tuesday in her home at De Witt following a lengthy illness. Lois Smith was born June 25, 1904 in De Witt to Harry and Frances (Shannon) Smith. She married Ambrose McDonald in St. Joseph's church October 24, 1932. Surviving are her husband; a daughter Patricia Kay; her parents, Mrs. and Mrs. Harry Smith of De Witt and a brother Herbert of De Witt. The funeral is being held today in St. Joseph's church with the Rev. John Moriarty officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's cemetery in De Witt. Publication unknown. "Donnie" Smith, 76, of DeWitt, died Monday at his home. There will be no services or visitation. His body was donated to the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City for research. He was born on Jan. 27, 1928, to Herbert L. and Helen I. Baird Smith in Clinton. On Dec. 2, 1961, he married Joy Koch Smith. He was farmer in the DeWitt area. He was a former member of Clinton County Cattleman's Association, Red Angus Association, National Cattleman's Association and the Day and Night Lions Club. Survivors include his wife; a son, Kurt Smith of Portland, Ore.; daughter, Major Kay Smith of Colorado Springs, Colo.; a brother, H. Baird Smith of DeWitt; one granddaughter; and three nephews.
