Julia L. Prawl Mrs. Julia A. Prawl, 70, died unexpectedly early this morning in a St. Joseph hospital. Born in Rochester, she moved to Iowa and about 1950 she worked as a nurse in the Wadsworth veterans hospital for 15 years. She retired when she was 65 and moved to St. Joseph about six years ago. Her address then was 520 North 12th but for the past five years she had been in a St. Joseph nursing home. She was the widow of John D. Prawl, who died in July 1961. A son Marvin Gabhart, also preceded her in death in 1965. Mrs. Prawl was a member of the Methodist Church. She belonged to the Macdonald-Dugger-Duncan American Legion Post Auxiliary, the Eagles Lodge and the Rebekah Lodge. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Frances Paschke and Mrs. Berniece Metcalf, both of St. Joseph; three sons, Norman L. Gabhart, St. Joseph; John V. Gabhart, Peculiar Mo., and Earl P. Gabhart, living in Florida; a brother, Vincent Shannon, Crookston, Minn.; a sister, Mrs. Neal Ashworth, St. Joseph; eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Born in Maitland, Mo., Mr. Ashworth had lived most of his life in St. Joseph. He was a grounds maintenance foreman at Missouri Western State College for 10 years, retiring in 1979. Metcalf, 76, St. Joseph, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at a St. Joseph hospital. For 36 years, Mr. Metcalf had been employed by the Drovers and Merchants Bank, now known as the Drovers Mercantile Bank, until retiring as vice-president in 1983. After that, he worked for 12 years for Interfaith Community Services in St. Joseph as director of management and budget, retiring in 1995. Born in Oregon, Mo., on July 3, 1924, he was a graduate of the Oregon high school and attended Platt College in St. Joseph for two years. He had been a St. Joseph resident most of his life. During World War II, he served for 31/2 years in the Army and later served in the Air National Guard at Rosecrans Field. Mr. Metcalf was a member of Francis Street First United Methodist Church, St. Joseph, where he was treasurer and board member; South Side Rotary, St. Joseph, of which he was a past president; 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason; Blue Lodge, A.F.&A.M., Oregon and Forest City, Mo.; and Moila Shrine Temple, Legion of Honor and Pony Express American Legion Post No. 359, all of St. Joseph. He had been an assistant Scout leader for Troop No. 21 at Wyatt Park Christian Church and a member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. On Aug. 1, 1948, he married Bernice Gabhart in St. Joseph. She survives of the home. He was preceded in death by his parents, E.A. Lonnie Metcalf and Pearl Metcalf Shores. Born April 15, 1933, in McCook, Neb., Mort grew up in Marysville, Kan. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954. Mort drove a city bus for 10 years. Then he worked as a baker for Wonder Bread Co., retiring in 1990. On June 18, 1964, he married Lois Berniece (Ashworth) Young. They were married 41 years last June. She survives of the home. Mort was a caring and loving person. His family and friends meant the world to him. He was baptized as a member of McCarthy Baptist Church and served as a hospice volunteer. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Angie (Shafer) Young; a brother, Lyle Young; ex-wife, Lena Marie Hogan; and grandson, Shawn Michael Young.
