Clinton Morning Age March 30, 1904 Mrs. Mary (Shannon) Lane At the home of her sister, Mrs. McGrath in Clinton Tuesday evening March 29 1904 occurred the death of Mrs. Mary Lane, nee Shannon. Mrs. Lane was born in County Clare, Ireland in 1832. In 1850 she came to the United States and settled near Clinton, and in 1853 she was married to Mr. Patrick Lane. In 1874 the family came to this county (Shelby) and located near Shelby, Iowa. She was the mother of 9 children, six of whom preceded her in death. Owing to ill health she gave up the farm life about five years ago and spent most of the balance of her days with her sister at Clinton. Her body was accompanied by her sons, James and Patrick and the latter's wife; Wm. Shannon of Chicago, brother of the deceased, Mr. and Mrs. John McGrath of Clinton, Mrs. James McDermott of Charlotte, and Mrs. John Shannon of Chicago. The funeral was attended by a great number of old acquaintances and friends, and the service was held at St. Mary's church. Father Hansen pronounced the obsequies, and an eloquent and feeling sermon on the life and virtues of the deceased was delivered by Father Morrin of Walnut, and the remains were laid to rest in St. Mary's cemetery. Mrs. Lane was throughout her long life a faithful and devoted Christian, a true wife, a loving and self-sacrificing mother and a cheerful and generous friend who shed a halo of love and sunshine over all who crossed her path. Her life was that of a martyr to duty, and her death was crowned the memory of years that were spent for God. Though weighed down in later years by the burdens of failing health, she bore her suffering with the fortitude of a hero and of a saint, and the happy and sunny disposition which earlier life had made her the desire of every circle and the idol of her own remained with her to the closing scene, until with loving she turned for the last time to look on the faces of those she loved. The grave has opened to receive her, and all that was mortal is consigned to is parent dust. Above that bosom in which every virtue found a home and blossomed like the rose, the flowers of spring will nestle and exhale their perfume as did the flowers of purity from her tender and devoted heart. The living struggling soul which held the narrow way in which the trail follows but which ends with heaven's crown, has passed from this vale of tears to enjoy in endless bliss the glories of eternal morn.
