Raymond Dewey Watt Jr. 1932-2006 The Rev. Raymond Dewey Watt Jr., a compassionate pastor, a skillful interpreter of sacred texts, and a fervent sports fan, died on April 19, 2006. He died, surrounded by family, at the East Alabama Medical Center. Rev. Watt is survived by his wife of 50 years, Elise Watt, by his brother, Barton Watt, and by his sister, Martha Gaines. Other survivors include Lisa Rae Watt (his daughter), David Watt (his son), Laura Levitt, Jourdan Witamyer, Graehme Witamyer, and Kurtis Piilbin. Born on 24 January 1932 in Washington D.C., Watt was educated at Howard College (now Samford University) and at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served congregations in Mississippi, Alabama, Ohio and Southern California. Watt was well-known for the avidity with which he visited people who were sick or imprisoned. Although Watt loved to sing hymns, he was never especially good at carrying a tune. He was a splendid preacher. His sermons, which tended to focus on the writings of the Apostle Paul, were moving and erudite. The sermons were, from time to time, also quite funny. Watt found it easy to laugh and he had a knack for making other people laugh, too. He loved sports in general and baseball in particular. The achievements of the Homestead Grays, the Washington Senators, and the Los Angeles Dodgers filled him with great pride. The memorial service for Rev. Watt will be held at three in the afternoon on Friday, April 2, 2006 in the chapel of the Alabama Funeral Home. Alabama Funeral Homes are in charge of the arrangements.
