The Alexander Scott issue of the Scott Genealogical Quarterly had Crystal David William Scott listed as a son of Alexander Scott and his first wife, Margaret McGrew. I was once willing to accept Alexander as CDW's father because of the coincidences of them living in the same area of Indiana, Crystal's parents coming from Kentucky, and Crystal's service as a Christian minister, despite CDW not being named in Alexander's will. However, more evidence has recently come to light which rejects the hypothesis that CDW is a son of Alexander. This was sent to me in Jan. 2004 by CDW descendent Karen Cull Serna, who had received some of her information from her cousin Ethel Martin.

I had already discovered that some other researchers name John Scott and Mary ``Polly'' DeMoss as the parents of Crystal DW Scott. This is supported by the bible Karen mentions below.

Karen wrote (slightly edited):

My 2gr grandfather was Rev. Flemmon Scott, b. 05 Apr 1819 in IL. He also lived in Cass Co, IN. He can be found in the land records along with one of his brothers, Parmer Scott, where they purchased land in IN in the 1830s. He was married to Phebe James in White Co, IN in Sep, 1841. He and Phebe had three children there before moving to Marshall Co, IL where he can be found in the 1850 census under the name of Clemon Scott. He and some of his brothers, and perhaps cousins as well, then moved to northern MO during the 1850s. These names and locations can also be found in the land records. In the 1860 census, Rev. Flemmon Scott and his family are living in Ozark Co, MO. where many of Phebe's James family had already moved. They are also in the 1870 Ozark Co, MO census. Flemmon died in 1884, and Phebe died in 1886 in MO. Flemmon listed both of his parents as being born in KY.

One of the facts that our Scott family knew was that Grandpa Scott had brothers, two of which were Greenup and Crystal. He said that Crystal was a preacher. Their father was also a preacher. Flemmon gave KY as the place of birth of his parents.

Flemmon and Phebe also had a family Bible. It gives birthdates for their children, and some other family members as well. After researching this and having no reason to doubt that Crystal, Greenup, Flemmon, Parmer, and others were siblings as Flemmon had said, I concluded that there was no way that Alexander Scott and Margaret McGrew could be their parents --- not unless he had a bunch of babies in between his two marriages. His 2nd marriage wasn't until 1820. Flemmon's folks were in IL having babies. I have never seen anything about Alexander living in IL.

In the Scott's Bible that there are death dates for a John and Polly Scott: John in 1837 or 1847 and Polly in 185l. And also, in the 1850 Marshall Co., IL census there is a Polly Scott living with Flemmon's brother, Parmer. She was 56 yr. old and was born in KY. Her husband was likely deceased.

None of the descendants of Flemmon, Crystal, and the rest of them named any of their sons Alexander. Crystal and Flemmon both had sons they named Gabriel M. Scott and Greenup Scott. Parmer named his son Crystal. They had a brother named John. [Researcher John Curry] found that one of his relatives was a Rev. Wm. Winegardner, who was married 3-4 times. One of his wives, whom he had two children with, was a Nancy DeMoss Scott. He said that she had brothers named Crystal, Flemmon, Greenup, Thomas, Joseph, and Parmer Milton. John and Gabriel weren't mentioned, but they fit into the picture somewhere. Thomas was born about 1820 when Alex and his 2nd wife were in In or Oh on their honeymoon not in IL having a baby.

CDW Scott was an early settler of Liberty Twp, White Co., Indiana, coming there about 1834-35. He was elected Inspector of Elections there in 1838 and early elections were held at his cabin. The New Light Church was organized in his house in 1837. He and Greenup Scott were also noted early day hunters of Liberty Twp.

CDW was ordained as a minister both in Indiana and Minnesota. He was ordained as a minister at the Tippecanoe Christian Conference in Cass Co., Indiana on 28 Sep 1854.

CDW and his second wife Laura moved to Ottawa Twp, Le Sueur Co., Minnesota in May of 1856, along with several of their children.
