John Cox

spouse: Jinney ``Jane''
Children:
Jinney COX
Dinah COX

John and Jinney Cox are named as the parents of the Jinney Cox who married John Ballard in the marriage record. Upon looking into this John Cox, I found there were two different John Cox families living along the Gasper River in Logan and Warren Counties, Kentucky. The Gasper River is the border between the two and Warren was formed out of Logan County in 1796-97. The Reuben Ballard family also lived along the Gasper River. Logan County was formed in 1792 from Lincoln County.

One John Cox appears on the first Logan County tax list in 1792. John is over 21 and has 11 horses and 21 cattle. There is also a Phenias Cox listed. In 1793 and 1794, this same John Cox and Phinis Cox are listed, and John Cox's number of cattle increases. In 1793, a Samuel Cox also appears on the Tax list. But in 1795 is when it really gets interesting. In 1795, the following Cox listings are found: John, Sr., Samuel, Sr., John, Jr., Phinis, and Phinis. By comparing the number of cattle, etc. it appears that John, Jr. is the same person as the John listed in 1792-1794. John Cox, Sr. only has 2 horses and 7 cattle. A second 1795 tax list also shows that one John Cox and one Phinis Cox each have 200 acres of second-rate (out of three possible ratings) land on the Gasper River and paid taxes in 1793 and 1794. In 1796, both John Cox, Jr. and John Cox, Sr. are listed as each having 200 acres of second rate land on the Gasper River. Again, it is John, Jr. who has the larger herd: 6 horses and 43 cattle. John, Sr. only has 3 horses and 3 cattle.
