Keeran immigrated to Philadelphia in 1862. While fairly ``fresh off the boat'', he saw a recruiting station for Marines in Philadelphia and enlisted. He served with the Union in the civil war and was in the service until 1866 or 1867. He later farmed in Crawford County, Iowa.
His parents were Patrick Foley and Katherine Maher. His mother's father was Tom Maher. He had a sister Mary in Ireland, a brother Daniel in Australia, a brother John in Baltimore, and a brother James in Chicago.
His name is misspelled in the Farrell Family history as Keenan.
