Jase swinging out over the canyon on the vine

This vine is one of the most fun things to do in the whole park. The boys just love it and it's hard to get them to leave once we get to this spot. We 'discovered' it late this past summer. Not many people know just where this is as it is not on any of the maps. Anyway, if you're hiking from the lodge to St. Louis Canyon, about half way there, on the right side, there's this pretty big canyon that is about the shape of a half of a V. Tall trees hang over the gorge. Hanging from high atop one of these trees is this very long vine. It must be a good inch and a half in diameter and about 60-70 feet long. The boys get up on this cliff, grab onto the vine (for dear life) and leap. What a ride! It also affords one a terrific view of the canyon below. I've even 'ridden' it many times myself.

Needless to say, a LOT of the pictures I have are of us swinging on this vine. It looks like the vine has been there for a long time and has been 'utilized' by a few others before us too. If you swing hard enough (which I haven't done yet), you can even touch the other side of the canyon with your feet. Jase (9 years old) has been able to accomplish that on several occassions. There is no way to 'land' on the other side as it is a near vertical wall all the way to the very bottom of the canyon. Joey (10 years old) has even ridden it at dusk and after dark. What a thrill that is (so he says) to launch yourself into near total darkness. Even Jess (who is 7 years old) has swung on the vine many times.

You'll probably not want to miss this 'attraction' when you visit the park. It is a relatively short walk from the lodge.
Don't miss some more fabulous photos of... THE VINE.
