Bill Elliot was getting back into form in 1997. He had 10 top tens and 5 top fives. He finished eighth in the year end point standings. As usual he was voted most popular driver by the fans. Bill won the Winston Million in 1985, the first year it was offered. Only one other driver has ever won the Winston Million. This accomplishment earned him the nick name "Million Dollar Bill". He also holds the all time speed record for a stock car with a qualifing speed of 212.809 miles per hour at Talladega.
