Young Roy "Buckshot" Jones has quickly become a fan favorite on the NASCAR Busch Series Grand National Division. The University of Georgia graduate scored his first career win in a stunning finish at Milwaukee in 1996, and picked up his first career Bud Pole later in the season at Rockingham. The Jones team is housed in Spartanburg, S.C., under the watchful eye of crew chief Ricky Pearson, brother of two-time NASCAR Busch Series champion Larry Pearson and son of NASCAR legend David Pearson. For 1998, they will undertake an ambitious schedule. The No. 00 Pontiac Grand Prix will be a regular on the NASCAR Busch Series with Bayer Aspirin/Alka-Seltzer as primary sponsor combined with Keebler and Brunswick Indoor Recreation as associate sponsors. The No. 00 plans to make eight appearances on the NASCAR Winston Cup Series as well with Aquafresh as primary sponsor and Brunswick Indoor Recreation coming along as an associate sponsor. Jones made his series debut at Milwaukee in 1995 after failing to qualify for several events. Pearson joined the team shortly after the Alliance racing team he was working for folded. Jones began racing in 1991 at Lanier Raceway near Gainesville, Ga., while still in college. He started racing on the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series in 1993 and finished 19th in points during his first season. Since then he has raced in several different divisions to gain experience, and scored his first Late Model win at Peach State Speedway in Jefferson, Ga. A second-generation driver, Jones was a 130-pound starting defensive back at Tucker High School. He went on to graduate from the University of Georgia with a business degree. While Jones' real first name is Roy, the nickname 'Buckshot' was given to him as a child by grandfather, who told him "you're tough as buckshot" after Roy was accidently hit in the head and quickly recovered.
