A child Samuel GRAY is mentioned in a document (see sources under Josiah
John GRAY) as a child of William [II] and Mary. Born 2 Feb 1816.
We are not certain of the order of birth. It is noted that the boys are listed first.
Perhaps the parents (William [II] and Mary moved from Canada to New England and fished
there, moving away during the Revolutionary War, probably around 1780. They could have
moved back and forth from Canada to New England. Pearl Henneberry reports that Stephen
Gray (son of Josiah and Catherine) and his wife were living in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
SOURCES:
1. The Cornwallis
Document for the names and William [II]s wifes name.
2. Birth dates of Josiah and his wife Catherine
(or Catharine) from my grandfather Joseph Albert Gray in an interview conducted when I was
about 10 years old.
3. Marriage date of Josiah and Catherine and
Josiahs death date from Brunswick St. United Church Register, Halifax. (Records were
reported by circuit riders and placed in the Halifax church.)
4. Josiahs tombstone at United Church
Cemetery in Sambro states he was born July 31, 1876 and names his wife as Catherine. But
it also reports he was 69 years and 19 days old when he died. He actually was 63 years and
15 days old.
5. Rebeccas birth date reported in
Brunswick St. United Church under baptisms of 1820-1829: "Rebecca dau of William and
Mary Gray b. Feb. 25, 1828."
6. Letter from Pearl Henneberry to my son
Lawrence Gray, written from Sambro, Nova Scotia on December 11, 1984. She is the source of
Stephen and Mary living in Gloucester. Other genealogical information appears in this
letter and may be referred to in later postings.
