64. William Gray-169
1Smith, Joseph, et. al., Petition of Joseph Smith and Others of Sambro and the Harbours Adjacent (PANS), RG5/Series Pa/Vol. 121/1826.
This petition, requesting salt to be imported into the area so that the Fisheries could operate, was signed by 135 fishermen including William, James, Thomas, Samuel and Charles Gray, all, probably, sons of William Gray. They would have been in age ranging from 36 to 44. Also signing were William Gray, probably the father, Abijah Smith (Abijah's father-in-law) and William Ring (probably also Abijah's father-in-law.) The full text of the Petition is found under William Gray. The only son not signing was Josiah.2Gray, Donald, Donald Gray Notes.
These notes were given to Wallace F. Gray by Donald Gray of Halifax in 1984. His source unknown. Wallace Gray at the time wrote that it is possible these records came from St. George Church, Anglican.
""William Gray, arrived Halifax with Lord Cornwallis contingent in
1749, he married Ellen MacNiel Oct 16/1779
"Their children:
A. Charles Gray, B. 1785, D 1870; M. Mary Smith Dec. 15/1806
B. Samuel Gray B 1783
C. William Gray B 1770 {Notes in my handwriting say, 'Marriage
register of those md. in Sambro.')
D. Thomas Gray B 1778
E. James Gray B . C1773 D 1814 M. Mary Beacket, widow Nov. 14 [can't
read year]
F. Josiah Gray B CA 1769."
The question is, if William came to Halifax in 1749 why did he wait until
1779 to marry. Furthermore, his first child was born in 1769, ten years
before. Assuming the marriage was in 1768 (one year before the first
child was born), why did William wait 19 years to marry after arriving
at Halifax? How old was he when he arrived?
The two documents agree as to the names of the William Gray
children. Further research needs to be made to clarify some
discrepencies."3Cornwallis Document.
!SOURCE: Source for both marriages of William Hart is the "Cornwallis
Document;." This doc also says that "William Hart, Sr., and his son were
lost on their way from Halifax to Sambro when a storm came up and it is
supposed the sea swamped the boat as nothing was found of the bodies or
wreckage." We are left to wonder who was the son? And, we assume, this
was William Hart's father. Was he the son?.
