Howard was the brother of Helen Esther BUNGARD. He died at the age of 22.

Howard Luther Bungard Journal
From a Memorandum booklet written by Howard. Given to Wallace F. Gray by his mother (Howard’s sister) Helen Esther Bungard Gray. This journal was written by Howard the year of his death and gives us a rare picture of his character. It also gives us a glimpse of life on the farm. From remarks by his father at the end of the journal, Howard had apparently been ill and had spent some time in a sanatorium. This explains his inactivity during the time of this writing.

planted sweet pea seed March 11th. Sixty two seeds.
21 White, 2 pink and 20 lavendaer. King White. Elfreda pearson and Orchid.
Papa’s man from Tacoma City Employment Office came March 11th.
Pruned Logan berries. March 11. Helen went to Wades’.
March 9. Grandma Waddell buried. [Can't identify who this is.]
March 13. Transplanted stock plants today. eight plants.
March 14. Papa went to Rainier. Man left. Miss Greene came up.
March 15. Set incubator. Mary G. came up. Letters last night from Jim and Elsie. Card from C. W.
March 17. Mrs. A. Waddell, Mrs. Sever and Mrs. Vail were up this afternoon. Louis finished work on schoolground yesterday. Cards from Vista, Sid and Wayne.
March 19. Papa dug potatoes for Dairs, cultivated strawberries and plowed chicken yard.
March 20. Papa dug potatoes and disked chicken yard. Helen called on Mrs. Vail and Miss Greene.
March 21. Papa went to Rainier. I mailed letters to Elsie, Jim, Clara, C. W. and sent to Routledge for 2 lb. of "Wonder’ fertilizer got letter from payne and brackets and digging ford from Aunt Katie. Got letter from payne.
March 22. John Gurley and Sam Dugan and family came up. Gave Mrs. Dugan sweet pea seed and daffodil & grape Hyacinth bulbs. Aunt Christine sent a man out from town. Walked all the way. Hired.
March 23. Washday. New man seems to take hold.
March 24. Bad day. Snow and rain. Killed pig in afternoon.
March 25. Bad day. Cut pig up. Weight 295 lbs with head. Head 38 lbs.
Man grubbed Kale rts.
March 26. Snowed for some time this afternoon but all gone now. Pa and man are burning logs in field below barn. Helen churned.
March 27. Papa went to Rainier. Man finished logs and sawed wood. Sent letters to Aunt Kate, payne Lowman and Hanford and stake agronomy. Got letters form Verna and Elsie and photo postal from C. W. got fertilizer from Routledge. Mr. Hand called up. Snowed two inches last night and this morning. Gone now.
March 28. Pa feels rather under the weather. He and man work on logs in swale. Mrs. Yourex and Mrs. Almond came up after dinner. I wrote to Elsie.
March 29. Stayed in bed until two o’clock. Wade brought mail. Got letter from Jim and one from Lowman & Hanford. Wrote to Jim and Verna. Tried "Wonder" on house plants.
March 30. Papa and man blew stump in chicken yard also took out some fences Got card from Miss Eichel. Wrote to Arthur.
March 31. Six inches of snow this morning. Helen goes to Goodwin’s. Pa’s shoulder pretty sore. Plant T. R. Beonias yesterday.
April 1. Papa went to town. Mr. Hethrick very sick. Fair day.
April 2. Good weather until late in day. Then a big shower rained all night. Thermo at 64 degrees.
April 3. Good day again. Papa and man plowed chicken yard. Have burned the logs in center of field and are after a stump.
April 4. Good day. Just one big shower in afternoon. Pa & man fixed up room for little chicks. Bought 2 lb. of butter from Louis.
April 5. M..G. Joe Piper and Wades were here for dinner yesterday. Good day. Got letter from Verna and one from Agronomist. Sweet peas coming up.
April 6. Fine day. Got cake from Tacoma sent March 20. No good. Wrote to Verna. Papa disced chicken yard. First rhubarb of season today.
April 7. Fine day. John dig potatoes in cows corrall. Papa disced ground by barn and harrowed chicken yard. Took chicks out of incubator. Picked first narcissis of season. yellow and white. Sent to childs Sunday for seeeds.
April 8. Good day. Papa went to Rainier. John dug potatoes behind barn. Got card from Mrs. Lee Waddel. Sent letter to Verna & order to Sears & Roebuck.
April 9. Good day. Hauled manure on garden. Gathered old hay out of field below house. Louis brought butter milk [or butter and milk?] Mikoff came up for potatoes.
April 10. Rained. Greased and washed hardness. Papa put up stove in little chicks room. Louis went to Seattle.
April 11. Built fence across chicken yard and moved gate. Shower in afternoon. Helen went to Valils to get a package from Tacoma.
April 10. Easter Sunday. Rained very hard all evening and night. Looked at Sweet peas. Only 38 up so far. Wrote to Mrs. Lee Waddell yesterday.
April 13. Papa went to Rainier. Aunt Kate came out. Got letter from Miss Eichel. Got rubber ring for mamma but can’t pump it up. Two heavy showers.
April 14. Mamma’s birthday. Had nothing for her. Papa cleaned stove. Found big hole in reservoir. Had to take it out. Rained more or less all day. Auntie promised strawberries from Tacoma if I could tell her when papa would go to Rainier again. Wrote to Miss Eichel and Sears, Roebuck. Must return ring. Got pens from Pullman yesterday.
April 15. Rained a good part of the day. Papa brought the hot bed up from the barn. He and John fell bark tree. John has grass all set in yard and is trimming the corners.
April 16. Papa, John, Louis & Wade fixed telephone line. Finished from Rainier to Ruth’s place. Papa went to Rainier. Sent letters to Miss Eichel and Sear, Roebuck. Got letters form Elsie & Verna. Pretty good day.
April 17. Papa, Louis and Wade finished fixing the telephone line. John sharpened fence posts. Wrote letter to Elsie. Cloudy but no rain.
April 18.Papa and John set fence around barn. Got wall started. I wrote to Verna Auntie and Helen cleaned sitting room and pap’s and Mamma’s bedroom. Good day. Folks saw a bear in clover field. Didn’t get him.
April 19. Very heavy shower in forenoon. Helen went to Wades’. Telephone subscribers met at schoolhouse to decide on what part of the line each is to keep in repair. I wrote to Childs for seeds. horses got in yard twice.
April 20. Pa & John fixed fence so horses couldn’t get in. Blew stump that was in way of fence around barn. Helen and Auntie washed. I wrote to Seattle Sun for ?? Good day.
April 21. Papa went to Tacoma. Effie Coffee came up. John worked on fence. Got letter from Jim. Sent letters to Verna, Elsie, Childs and Seattle Sun. Fine day.
April 22. Papa came back. Got tooth fixed. I got seeds from Childs and air cushion from Sears Roebauck. Effie Coffee left.
April 23. Papa & John blew two more stumps out of right of way near cow corral. Put ??? in chicken yard in shape and planted potatoes. Heavy rain stopped sowing of seeds also. Helen went to visit Miss Greene. Will plant pink Lantana tonight. Stocks tomorrow. Mamma won’t use air cushion. I try it. Made record sheet. May Duke cherry in full bud and starting to bloom.
April 24. Aunt Kate washed my floor and aired the bedding. I planted Ten weeks Stocks and pink Lantana. I wrote to Miss Smith. Black Republican, Elton and papa’s Ging cherriesd in full bloom. My Lambert also shows a fair bloom. Sour cherries just beginning to bloom. Papa and John still working on fence and papa tried out the Manure Spreader.
April 25. Cloudy day. John and papa hauling manure and still clearning for fence. Clapp’s favorite pear in blossom. Planted Stocks out in hotbed. Wrote to Mr. Coffey. Miss Greene came up. Got letter from Clara. Papa & John finished fence and manured Kale ground also disked piece below barn. Ready to plow.
April 26. Paper, Helen and Miss Greene went to Rainier. John went to Wade’s in afternoon. Helen got lovely dress from Tacoma. Louis went over to Spencers. Got caught in a shower and asked pa to milk Ina. Very heavy rain and lightning & thunder.
April 27. Mamma very sick this morning unconscious. Better in afternoon. Bad day. Hail, rain and snow. Rained all last night. Helen and Auntie washed. Papa milked Ina at noon as Louis didn’t come till mid-afternoon.
April 28. Mamma unconscious all forenoon. passed away at 11:10 a.m. Mrs. Sever, Waddell and Fox came up with Mr. Vail in afternoon. Mr. and Mrs.Wade and Ethan also. Mrs.Waddell and Sever stayed all night.
April 29. Papa & Helen went to Rainier. Mrs. Sever & Mrs. Waddell made a lovely floral pillow. Louis brought Narkiss and Moss. Both ladies left when Papa got back, but Mrs. Fox came & stayed all night. I got book from Miss Eichel & letter from Elsie. Lovely day. John and Louis spaded and raked. After April 29 my boy did not write in this little book but he gradually grew weaker and finaly passed away on May 12, 1914 between 2 and 3 oclock a.m. He went to his dear mother and to God, where I hope to meet them and to be happy with them again and forever.

Mr.E. L. Payne of Calif. a friend of Howards at the Sanatorium passed away on Jan 27, 1917.
Miss Dena M. Eickel Howards nurse at the Sanatarium passed away Jan. 4, 1917 at the
Oakland Central Hosp. Calif.
Dec. 22, 1916. Went to Tacoma today to spend Christmas with Helen and the folk.
Bertha’s mother [Kirstine Christensen] very sick and passed away at 5 o’clock a.m. Tuesday the 26 Dec. 1916.
Funeral services held in Tacoma Friday the 29 and same morning Katie went east with the body and arrived at Hutchinson Minn, the 1st of January 1917 where she was laid at rest same day.
I came back from Tacoma on Jan 3, 1917.
