It all started in December of 1987...Damien is originally from Perth, Western Australia. He came to know the Lord through Brother and Sister LeRoy Sherry, missionaries to Australia (now missionaries to the Vanuatu Islands). He met an AIMer (Associates In Missions worker) there, who happened to be my friend from Canada. She gave my address to Damien, and we started writing letters to one another.
We soon became best friends and continued our correspondence...we shared many heartaches ( I lost my Grandfather to death), triumphs (Damien graduated from South Pacific Bible College), experiences (I went to New Zealand as an AIMer and recorded my first professional solo album), amazing happenings (I won a new Jeep 4x4 from Coca~Cola!), and fun times (Damien wrote some of the zaniest letters!). Meanwhile, three and a half years passed, and the Lord was leading Damien in another direction.
In 1992 Damien, through a scholarship and working hard to save up $10,000 in one year, came to America to further his degree at Christian Life College in Stockton, California. Before the school year started, though, he came to (FINALLY) meet his penpal face to face, after many years.
The whole four and a half weeks he spent with me and my family we had a wonderful time of fellowship. We were able to take him to 11 states, Washington, D.C., Niagra Falls, Canada, St. Louis, and Kings Island (in Cincinatti, OH). I even took Damien to his first David and the Giants concert (left). At that time we had no idea our friendship would blossom into something much greater!
After the month or so passed, Damien got back on a plane to California...From there we both went "downhill." We were very sad (and I didn't even understand why!). During the next few months, through phone calls and letters, our true feelings for one another began to make themselves known.
August and September came and went, then October was upon us. UPCI General Conference time! Conference was in Indianapolis that year, very convenient for us, since we live only an hour away from there... We were busy at the airport, picking up Damien as well as my sister and her husband, who were flying in from France. During Conference weekend I received a dozen roses from...guess who?!?! And the day before he flew back to California he got down on bended knee and asked the question...
The following June (1992) we were married at Pine Grove Pentecostal Assembly, a little octagonal-shaped log church in Bloomington, IN, USA, where my Dad is pastor. What a beautiful day it was! There were guests from around the world...my sister and her family from France, and friends and family from Australia and Canada. We were truly blessed.
We spent our honeymoon in Canada. We stayed five days in Gatineau, Quebec, then visited Montreal for a bit. We took a day cruise around the Thousand Islands in Ontario, and HAD to visit Niagra Falls--is any honeymoon complete without that?!?! (ha ha) Our two weeks went by all too quickly, but we have many memories to treasure...
