Afghans To Crochet
BABY'S RIPPLE AFGHAN

Size: Approx. 34" x 46" before fringing.
Materials: Worsted weight yarn, 20 ounces green; aluminum crochet hook size I (Canadian size) or size needed for gauge.
Gauge: 3 double crochets = 1 inch.
Instructions
With green, chain 118 loosely. Foundation Row(right side); Double crochet in third chain from hook, dc in each of next 5 chains, 3 dc in next chain, dc in each of next 7 chains, * repeat from * across.
Pattern Row:Chain 3, turn. Skip first 2 dc, dc in back loop onlyof each of next 6 dc, skip last dc, dc in top chain of turning chain. repeat Pattern Row until piece measures 46" or desired length. Finish off.
Fringe:Following Basic Fringe Instructions (see below), cut 10-inch strands of yarn and knot one strand in each stitch along both short ends of afghan.
Basic Fringe Instructions
Cut a piece of cardboard about 8-inches wide and half as long as specified in instructions for finished strands. Wind yarn loosely around cardboard, cut across one end when card is filled. Repeat several times and then start fringing. Wind more strands as you need them.
Fringe with wrong side of afghan facing you. Put the number of strands specified for one knot of fringe together and fold in half. With crochet hook draw folded end through space or stitch, pull loose ends through folded section and draw knot up tightly. Repeat, spacing as specified in afghan instructions. Trim ends evenly.

Baby's Crocheted SHELL STITCH

Size: Approx. 33" x 48" before fringing.
Materials: Worsted weight yarn, 28 ounces yellow; aluminum crochet hook size I (Canadian size 4) or size needed for gauge.
Gauge: In pattern (shell, single crochet, shell) = 3 inches.
INSTRUCTIONS
With yellow, chain 106 loosely.Foundation Row(right side): Work 4 double crochets in fourth chain form hook, * skip next 2 chains, sc in next ch, skip next 2 ch, 5 dc in next chain (shell made); repeat from * across: 18 shells. Chain 3, turn.
Row 2:Work 2 dc in first dc, skip next dc, sc in next dc, work a shell in next sc (between shells), * sc in center dc of next shell, work a shell in next sc; repeat from * across to last shell, skip first 2 dc of shell, sc in next dc, skip next dc, 3 dc in top chain of turning ch. Chain 1, turn.
Row 3:Sc in first dc, shell in next sc, * sc in center dc of next shell, shell in next sc; repeat from * across, ending with sc in top chain of turning chain. Chain 3,turn.
Row 4:Work 2 dc in first sc, sc in center dc of next shell, * shell in next sc, sc in center dc of next shell; repeat from * across, ending with 3 dc in last sc. Chain 1, turn. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until piece measures 47-1/2 inches or desired length; then repeat Row 3 once; do not chain 3 at end of row. Finish off.
Fringe:Following Basic Fringe Instructions, cut 10-inch strands of yarn. Use 5 strands for each knot of fringe; place a knot of fringe in center of each of 18 shells on both ends of afghan.

Baby's Crocheted GRANNY SQUARE

Size: 34" x 46 " (approx.)
Materials: Worsted weight yarn, 12 ounces green, 8 ounces white, 4 ounces yellow; aluminum crochet hooks sizes H and I (Canadian sizes 4 and 5) or sizes needed for gauge.
Gauge: With larger hook, one square = 6 " x 6 ".
INSTRUCTIONS
Granny Square (make 35): With larger hook and yellow, chain 4; join with a slip stitch in first chain to form a ring. Round 1:Chain 3, work 2 double crochets in ring, chain 1, * 3 double crochets in ring, chain 1; repeat from * twice, join with a slip stitch in top chain of beginning chain-3.
NOTE: Join all rounds in this manner. Finish off yellow.
Round 2:With right side of work facing, join white with a slip stitch in any chain-1 space. Work (chain 3, 2 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet) in same space as slip stitch, chain 1, * work (3 double crochet, chain 1, 3 double crochet) in next chain-1 space, chain 1; repeat from * twice; join.
Round 3: Continue in white, slip stitch in each of next 2 dc, slip stitch in next chain-1 sp, (chain 3, 2 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in same chain-1 sp, chain 1, work 3 dc in next chain-1 sp, chain 1, * work (3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in next chain-1 sp (corner), chain 1, 3 dc in next chain-1 sp, chain 1; repeat from * twice; join. Finish off white.
Round 4: With right side facing join green with a slip stitch in any chain-1 corner space. Work (chain 3, 2 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in same sp as slip stitich, chain 1, (3 dc in next ch-1 sp, chain 1) twice, * work (3dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in corner chain-1 sp, chain 1, (3 dc in next chain-1 sp, chain 1) twice; repeat from * twice; join. Do not finish off green.
Round 5: Continue with green, slip stitch in each of next 2 dc, slip stitch in next ch-1 sp, (chain 3, 2 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in same chain-1 space of corner, chain 1, (3 dc in next chain-1 sp, chain 1) 3 times, * (3 dc, chain 1, 3 dc) in next corner chain-1 sp, chain 1, (3 dc in next chain-1 sp, chain 1) 3 times; repeat from * twice; join. Finish off green.
Joining: Assemble squares having 7 rows with 5 squares in each row. With green begin joining squares by sewing or crocheting with slip stitch to form rows as follows:
Hold 2 squares with right sides together; being careful to match each stitch, work in the back loop only of each stitch across both squares starting in chain-1 at right-hand corner and ending in chain-1 at left-hand corner; finish off. Join all rows in same manner.
Edging: Round 1: With right side facing and smaller hook, join white with a slip stitch in back loop only of any afghan corner chain-1; chain 3, 2 dc in same stitch as joining, dc in back loop only of each of next 3 dc, * dc in back loop only of next chain-1, dc in back loop only of each of next 3 dc, repeat from * 3 times, work one dc in joining seam of squares, dc in back loop only of each of next 3 dc.
(NOTE: Do Not work into chain-1 stitches used to join squares.) Continue in this manner around entire outer edge of afghan, working one dc in back loop only of each dc, each chain-1, and each joing seam, working 3 dc in back loop onlyof chain-1 at each of the 3 remaining outer corners. Join; finish off white.
Round 2: With right side facing, join yellow with a slip stitch in back loop only of center double crochet of 3-dc group at afghan corner; chain 3, 2 dc in same stitch as joining, dc in back loop only of each dc along side edge, * 3 dc in back loop only of center double crochet of 3-dc group at next afghan corner, dc in back loop only of each dc along side edge; repeat from * around; join. Finish off yellow.
Round 3: With green, repeat Round 2. Finish off and weave in all ends.
