And my mind is filled with wondering
As I view the Christmas Throng,
Some whose lives are overburdened,
Others' lives are full of song.
Some buy many costly presents,
On their lists no name is lost.
Other care worn eyes grow tired
As they figure up the cost.
And they hesitate e'er buying
A much wanted doll or toy;
Trying to make slim budgets cover
Gifts for every girl and boy;
For the rent is now delinquent
and the food is getting low'.
'Coal bin, too, is nearly empty;
And the ground is white with snow.
Will that family in the cottage
Living close to you or me
On this blessed Christmas morning
Find a glistening Christmas tree?
Will there be a child this morning
Who'll find no toys with which to play?
Will there be an empty table
In this town on Christmas Day?
And I think of that first Christmas
'Most two thousand years ago,
How the shepherds and the wise men
Made the journey long and slow
To the cradle and the manger
On the Christ child new to call;
And they gave their costly presents
To the humblest child of all.
May the spirit of that Christ child
Fill the hearts of all this year
That the humble and the needy
May be filled with Christmas cheer.
For that little Bethlehem baby
Said, "Your blessing this shall be.
If you comfort these my children,
You will also comfort me."
