Memories of Florida

Oh Florida, Thou fairest state of all.
So oft' to thee on memory's page I turn
And in my fancy all thy charms recall
And for thy loveliness my heart does yearn.
Thy lakes and streams are grand.
Thy homes and cities fair,
But, oh, thy woods and flowers
Are a dream of beauty rare.

And in the waters edges
Grow blue hyacinths at our feet.
Out upon the river bosom
Water lilies pure and sweet.
While winged sail boats glide upon her
O'er her fans a perfumed breeze
And lengthening o'er her placid waters
Reach the shadows of the trees.

Where grows the pine and cypress
And the palm tree tall and grand
And the giant moss hung oak tree
Like a monarch robed doth stand
And the fair sweet Queen Magnolia
Sheds her fragrant perfume 'round.
Oh now, where in the world, a land
Like Florida is found?

Oh, those lovely summer evenings
Just a few short years ago,
Through the forest and the flowers
To this river we would go.
He, my tender, kind young husband.
I, his newly wedded wife.
Oh, those evenings on the river
Were the sweetest of our life.

And in this forest kingdom
Subjects great and small are found.
Some towering high up in the air.
Some creeping on the ground.
Here stands the stately sycamore.
The bay tree here we find
All joined in one great circle
For with Jasmine vines they're twined.

Oh the peace, the love, the romance
In that little rowing boat.
Each would ply a dripping paddle.
Down the river we would float.
Fishes jump and splash about us
There far from the haunts of man
We would tell our hearts best secrets.
There our future we would plan.

Here we find the Christmas Holly,
To every heart so dear,
Spreading out its shining branches
Lending all the forest cheer.
Here the sweet-gum and the maple
Are with honey suckles bound.
Oh, there's nothing sweet in nature
But in Florida is found.

Winter came, a southern winter.
Sunshine changed to rain and fog
So we left our lovely river
Sat around our fireside log.
But ere long the sun was shining
Winter was not cold nor long
Then the world was full of roses,
Orange blossoms and birds' song.

Oh, the wondrous living creatures
That inhabit this domain
Never leaving this, their shelter,
In the sunshine or the rain.
Here the alligators crawling through the marshes
Or basking near the water in the sun
And the mocking bird is calling
To his sweet mate, "Come love, come."

And within our little cottage
Grew a love so full, complete.
Oh, nowhere but in Florida
Could be a home so sweet.
As the summer days grew longer
Sweeter bloomed the summer flowers
Then a little life unfolded
And a baby girl was ours.

Then we merge from out of the forest
Where the air is rich and sweet
With magnolias in the branches,
Easter Lilies at our feet.
Now we view the shining river,
Slowly winding through the green.
Oh, nowhere but in Florida
Such sights are ever seen.

Oh, that lovely summer morning.
Oh, the happiness, the love.
She was like a water lily,
Like a sweet magnolia bud.
She was like my lovely river,
Gentle, placid, calm and true.
All my baby's perfect nature
Florida, I owe to you.
