I haven't the skill of the poets or the bards of ancient rhyme
To tell the world a story that endureth for all time,
But there's something in my nature that urges me to write
When I see the first star twinkling in the firmament at night
There's something deep inside me that longs for finer things,
For deeper thoughts and feelings than each day's experience brings.
There are thoughts that go a soaring to the heights of love sublime
And there's deeper notes resounding in this vibrant heart of mine.
I can look beyond the present with it's veil of grief and tears
And see a bright hereafter down the corridor of years.
I can feel the resurrection in the new born leaves of spring
And a useful life's function in the joy the harvest brings.
And the chirp of the robin; and the humming of the bees
As they gather loads of honey from the blossoming apple trees
Seem to add a touch of something more divine within my heart
And companionship with nature of my life becomes a part.
And I feel a tinge of sorrow where I see a sparrow fall
For I know that God, our Father, loves all creatures great and small.
But, to my mind the greatest gift God ever gave to Earth
Was when he made a mother and mother-love at birth
It's like a breath of heaven lingering 'round each happy home.
'Tis the light that always leads one back, no matter where we roam.
For there's something almost holy in a mother's tender care,
A companionship with Deity that no one else can share.
Just like a faithful lighthouse sends it's beacon forth to save,
A mother's love will light the way from childhood to the grave.
No matter in what byways her children's feet may trod,
A faithful mother's prayers and tears will lead them back to God.
