Something To Think About |
|||
'Tis a far, far cry from Seventy-six From Independence Hall Where sat intent, with faces grave, Brave statesmen one and all; With velvet breeches, powdered wigs, And faces stern and grave, And planned and prayed to God above The colonies to save. "God save a people sane and strong From the tyranny of kings. Help them avenge their many wrongs And independence bring. Let them be free instead of slaves," Thus swelled their mighty plea, Until from out the Old State House, Bells rang, "We shall be free!" Where is our "Jefferson" today? Where is a man who's strong Enough to challenge present ways and free the slaving throng Of millions; helpless, hungry, sad? Where is a "Lincoln" brave? Who would give his life's blood for the chance To free these modern slaves? Slaves of a system, rotten, weak, Where wealth and graft doth rule. Where right and reason, when they speak, Are counted but the "fool." Where few grow rich on many's toil Exploit the laboring throng And starve them while warehouses buldge Yet never think it wrong. |
And yet men dare not speak their thoughts. They dare not make protest. Our schools and colleges insist This system is the best. This land for which our fathers fought, For which they spilled their blood, For generations has been swept By a capitalistic flood. Who will ride forth as Paul Revere, The people to awake, Tear off this capitalistic yoke Its chains and shackles break And cry as Jefferson of old, "These people shall be free!: And in a not too distant day, Proclaim new liberty! New liberty to think and act, New liberty to work, And reap reward for what we do; No duty ever shirk. The best within us we will give. To us it will be given Sufficiently for every need, The goal for which we've striven. No more will little children cry In vain for daily bread, Nor women weep because they have No roof above their head. This generation will step forth, New freedom will demand Equality; a right to live, Justice throughout the land. |
