Notes on Joshua

His will (undated) was accepted into probate on May 12, 1770 "Joshua Hightower of Parish of Nottoway, county of Amelia, being very aged and infirm, wills to wife Susanah, the plantation and use of the small room in my house and three negroes and tools they work with and all household land kitchen furniture except the bed my son Charnel Hightower commonly lies on. to my son Charnel, land I now live on and all appurtenances thereto belonging, excepting that left his mother for her lifetime also two negroes after the death of his mother, also a feather bed and furniture.
To son Joseph two negroes.
To son Tavenor, two negroes.
To son Epaphroditus, three negroes.
To my grandson Joshua Hammond, a negro slave.
To grandson Joshua Thorn, a negro slave.
I lend to my daughter, Catherine Thorn the use of a negro slave for her lifetime, then to her sons, except her son Joshua who already has a slave.
To my son-in-law William Jones, two negroes and after death of my wife, another negro girl.
To granddaughter Keterine Hammond, a cow and calf.
To my son, Joseph, after the death of my wife, a negro man.
To granddaughter Agness Hightower, a negro.
If either of my children die without an heir, their share of my estate to be divided to the rest of my children that are living.
If either John or Joshua Hammond, my grandsons, die without issue, their part of the estate to go to their sisters, daughters of my daughter, Ann Hammond".
Executors: son, Charnel Hightower and son-in-law William Jones.

Granville County, NC, Book 1, pg. 355 8 Aug 1782. Commissioners Phil Hawkins, Jr., Bartlet Searcy and William Gillam divided negroes between the sons of Catherine Thorn as directedby will of Joshua Hightower deceased, and apportioned them thus: to Merriman Thorn, 4 negroes and he to pay other legatees 60 pds.;
to Hightower Thorn, 2 negroes and he to pay legatees 16 2/3 dollars; 1 negro to Thomas Thorn and 1 negro to Presley Thorn
