Samuel Wright

Samuel Wright was born 1760 in Ireland, and died August 30, 1844 in York Co., South Carolina. He married Mary Love 1783 in Chester Co., South Carolina, daughter of John Love and Elizabeth Royal. She was born 1763 in North Carolina, and died 1801 in Chester Co., South Carolina.

Notes for Samuel Wright:
Samuel WRIGHT was born about 1760 in Ireland. He (or the other Samuel) petitioned the court for citizenship on 6 Apr 1808, stating that he was born in Ireland in 1767 and had come to South Carolina in 1787. He immigrated in 1787 to from Ireland. I have absolutely no proof that it was our Samuel who is the subject of the below. It could have been the other aforementioned Samuel. In the Chester County Court (loose papers) is the following petition and order: Dated 6 Apr 1808 - "The Humble petition of Samuel Wright sheweth: That your petitioner was born in Ireland subject to the King of Great Britain and that he immigrated from Ireland in the year one thousand seven hundred and eighty seven with an intention to become a citizen of the United States and that he has resided at least five years previous to the time within the limits of the United States and one year at least within the limits and jurisdiction of this State. Your petitioner therefore prays your Honor that he may become a citizen of the United States according to the form and act of Congress in that place made and provided and your petitioner as in duty bound will pray. Signed: Samuel Wright.

His citizenship was granted on 8 Nov 1808 with George and James Kennedy attesting to his good character.
He was a tavern keeper in 1799 in Chester County, South Carolina. He died on 30 Aug 1844 in York County, South Carolina. Again, I have no proof that this is our guy or another by the same name. He was buried in Bethany Reformed Presbyterian Church Cemetery, York County, South Carolina. He placed his children in the custody of his brother-in-law, John Royal LOVE in 1801 - apparently due to the loss of his wife. He signed over a tract of land with buildings, etc., to John Royal LOVE to be used for the boys support.

Samuel does not appear in the Chester County records again until 1809 when he and son James sold the above referenced land, then never again that I can prove. There was another Samuel WRIGHT in Chester in the early 1800s who appears to be an entirely different man.

Children of Samuel Wright and Mary Love are:

1. James Love Wright, born 1783 in Chester Co., South Carolina; died 1821 in Morgan Co., Alabama. He married Winnifred C. Thorn 1803 in Chester Co., South Carolina; born 1785 in North Carolina; died July 1869 in Morgan Co., Alabama.

2. John Royal Wright, born 1786 in Chester Co., South Carolina; died Bef. 1808 in Chester Co., South Carolina.
