E.B. White

1899-1985

E.B. (Elwyn Brooks) White was born on July 11, 1899 in Mount Vernon, New York. He was a 1921 graduate of Cornell University. White wrote for both The New Yorker and Harper's magazines. In 1929 he married Katharine S. Angell. They were the parents of one son. In 1957 the Whites left New York and moved to a farm in North Brooklin, Maine. He was the recipient of many awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom (1963), the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award, presented by the American Library Association in 1970 for "a lasting contribution to children's literature." In 1978 he received a special Pulitzer Prize citation for the body of his work. He died on October 1, 1985. He succumbed to Alzheimer's Disease at his farm in North Brooklin, Maine.
