DIFFERENT APPALOOSA PATTERNS

1) BLANKET(B) a) with spots - the classic pattern refers to a white area normally over but not limited to the hips, which contains dark spots located with in the white blanket; the spots are usually the same color as the horse's base coat, although more than one color is often seen. The spots may vary from dime sized to four inches in diameter and may have haloes (roan edgings) around them.

b) without spots - like the blanket with spots, these horses have dark, contrasting foreparts. However, the blanket is solid white without spots and is the same size and shape as the spotted blanket variety.

2) LEOPARD(L) Base color is pure white with dark spots over the entire body, including the head, neck and legs. Many Appaloosas appear to be leopards because they may have spots on the rump and are light on the front but these are not True leopards: most often they are very light blue roans with dark spots and should be grouped in the blanket with spots category. Simply put, a true leopard is base color white with dark spots at birth or when shed first foal coat.

3) ROAN(R) A mixture of white and dark hairs which have any base color. Chestnut (red roan) and black (blue roan) are most common. Characteristic of this pattern are "varnish marks" which are groupings of dark hairs on the frontal bones of the face, on the legs, stifle, above the eyes, point of the hip and behind the elbow. Most roan Appaloosas are born solid and "color out" with age. In order to receive regular registration papers, roan must also display other Appaloosa characteristics, ie: striped hooves, white sclera and mottled skin.

a) roan blanket with spots - a mixture of white & dark hairs over a portion of the body which also contains white and/or dark spots with the roan area.

4) FROST(F) A mixture of white and dark hairs usually over but not limited to the hip area on a darker base color. This pattern can develop with age or Appaloosa can be born with it.

5) SNOWFLAKE(S) White spots on a dark base or dark spots on a light base over a portion or total of the horse's body - not to be confused with a true leopard.

6) SOLID(AP) The MAHR will allow solid colored horses to be registered provided the following condition is met:

a) Both parents must be MAHR registered horses.

MAHR SIRE/DAM AWARD PROGRAM

MAHR SUPERIOR SIRE/DAM - any stallion or mare who has sired/produced two offspring who have each earned their ROM at Halter or Performance and AOA awards OR three offspring with ROMs at Halter & Performance.

MAHR PREMIER SIRE/DAM - any stallion or mare who has sired/produced two offspring who have each earned their ROM at Halter, Performance, AOA and Champion awards OR three offspring with ROMs in Halter & Performance and AOA award.

MAHR SUPREME SIRE/DAM - any stallion or mare who has sired/produced two Supreme Champions OR a total of three offspring, two of whom must be Champions and one a Supreme Champion.

MAHR ELITE SIRE/DAM - any stallion or mare who has sired/produced three Supreme Champions and is himself/herself a Supreme Champion.

1) The sires/dams must be MAHR registered in order to qualify for these awards.

2) Champion offspring not registered with MAHR will count toward the awards for their respecive sires and dams, but the titles the offspring have earned with other clubs must meet with MAHR standards.

3) The owner of the sire and/or dam does not have to be the owner of the offspring.

4) The sire or dam does not have to be actively showing in order to earn the above awards as the offspring do the "work."

5) A note regarding dams: one foal per mare per year unless it is an E.T. (Embryo-Transfer) foal, in which case the surrogate dam must be listed; or unless the mare slips twins. Obviously, the twins must have the same sire and dam. Keep in mind the fact that twins are uncommon.
