Highlights

2001-01-01 (Mo) - New Year's Day

Weather: Sunny spells and some showers, all helping to melt the last of last week's snow. 6 degrees is a welcomely-warm top temp.

I need to get a new computer. The current one is 1995 vintage, 800MB hard disk (full) and is beginning to show its age. Looking for a 128MB RAM / 20GB+ disk / CD writer, and (preferably) all for under a grand. Trek to PC World shows that they're *almost* on my wavelength, but not quite. That spec is £1100, including some software and dooberies I'll never use. The trip might be over, but the search goes on!

Football: Man United goes 11 points clear just a day into 2001 and the defending titlists show no sign of weakening, following a one-sided 3-1 victory over West Ham.
The sight of Arsenal tied with Sunderland 11 points behind Manchester United might imply that the Gunners are down in sixth or seventh place. Arsene Wenger's team is second and likely to go no higher after a tame 1-0 loss at modest Charlton. Sunderland beat another surprise package, Ipswich, 4-1. Ipswich is fourth at the half-way stage.
Gerard Houllier's Liverpool has lost six games on the road and failed to find any consistency, floating between third and sixth and currently in fifth place after a 2-1 victory over West Ham.
Leeds United, a longtime leader last season, has been plagued by injuries to eight players and languishes in 13th place after losing four times at home and winning just once on the road. The side tied struggling Middlesborough 1-1.
Chelsea has been the most puzzling team of all, winning eight times and losing just once at home but failing to win in 10 away games. A 1-0 victory over Villa lifted the blues to ninth.
Bobby Robson's Newcastle, which spent most of last season battling relegation, has climbed to seventh. Likewise Tottenham, unbeaten at home but without an away win, isn't likely to finish higher than halfway and, at 12th out of the 20 teams, is sliding dangerously close to the relegation zone. Spurs' position is boosted by a scrappy 4-2 win over Newcastle.
Down at the bottom, Bradford is five points adrift despite a 2-1 win at Leicester. The Bantams barely avoided relegation last term and look doomed this term. Manchester City and Middlesbrough are also in the relegation zone but have the players to pull them clear and that puts pressure on Coventry, Everton and Derby. Coventry and Man City drew 1-1, while Derby beat Everton 1-0.

Weather: Cloudy, with some showers early. Clearing later. +9.

Travel: This worries me. No problems going out, and the 1722 is just 4 (four!) minutes late leaving Birmingham, and 2 late at Wolverhampton. Someone pick me off the floor.

Alarming moment at work. Speak to caller, have to ring off when someone comes to the door. Colleague picks up the phone, gets very confused when caller asks for a lady with a deep voice. Now, I may not be the deepest bass in the world, but that sort of confusion is a bit much.

Liquid... Matthew Perry (Chandler from Friends) to star as James Bond in the next-but-one 007 movie? Does that make Courtney Cox the new Denise Richards? ITWSBT.

Peter Andre, flavour of the year for nine months during 1996, has been dropped by Mushroom Records. Andre, who had two number one hits with "Natural" and "I Feel You," but best known for the Real Hit "Mysterious Girl," had failed come-backs in 1997 and 1998. Silent since, Mushroom has come to the conclusion that it would be "too expensive" to relaunch Andre and his rock-hard abdomen. The new album is up for sale to the highest bidder. I'd like to start the bidding at 5p.

george carmen 1929 - 2001George Carman QC, one of the country's leading barristers, has died aged 71 after a battle against cancer. Son Dominic Carman said his father "was a small man but with his stage as a courtroom and his audience as the jury he was a giant among men."
Carman had a reputation for a fearsome intellect and his cross-examination helped destroy the reputation of former Tory MP Neil Hamilton, who lost his libel action against Harrods owner Mohamed Fayed last December. He also helped destroy the reputation of another Tory, Jonathan Aitken, who was eventually jailed for perjuring himself when Mr Carman forced him on to his own sword of truth. Mr Carman represented The Guardian against Aitken two years ago. He also successfully represented Richard Branson against the boss of G-Tech, Guy Snowden, whom Branson accused of trying to bribe him.

wales falls apartOne person was killed today and another seriously injured when a cliff on the North Wales coastline collapsed, sending two cars plunging over the edge. A woman was confirmed dead on arrival at the lifeboat base in Porth Dinllaen. She was in one of two cars which plunged 40 feet over the cliff edge when the mudslide happened shortly after 11am.
A man was freed from a car and flown to hospital in Bangor with severe injuries caused by crushing. His condition was said not to be life-threatening. Nobody else was thought to have been injured.
Captain of the RAF rescue helicopter, Flight Lieutenant John Stanley: "When we arrived at the scene there were people from all the rescue services and police, digging to see if there were any people in the cars or in the mudslide. Firemen were cutting their way into a car on the beach and the casualty inside was placed on a spinal board before he was lifted on a stretcher into the aircraft. When we returned after delivering our casualty to hospital, the tide was lapping around rescuers who were still carrying out searches."

Weather: Sunny to start, turning drizzly by mid-afternoon. 7 degrees is top weight.

Travel: Morning is fine. The 1702 from Longbridge goes AWOL, but a quick shimmy up the Bristol Road gets me to the 1722 at 1729. It leaves 7 minutes later, even though it could have been pathed away at 1731 when one left for Great Malvern. Stuck behind a stopper, it's 1806 before we arrive at Wolverhampton.

The surgeon who operated on Pope John Paul after he broke his leg in 1994 has become the first member of his medical team to acknowledge publicly that the 80-year-old pontiff is suffering from Parkinson's disease. Orthopaedic surgeon Gianfranco Fineschi told a weekly magazine he was concerned about the Pope's health after a gruelling Jubilee Year in 2000, during which he attended engagements nearly every day.
"Every time the Pope sets off on a journey or when he gets tired during an official engagement, I fear for him," Fineschi said. "I should order him to rest but it would be futile. The various operations he has had and the Parkinson's disease have made him suffer much."

Mystery surrounded the health of Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. The Ministry of Misinformation rejected claims that Saddam, 63, is clinging to life after suffering a massive stroke at a New Year's Day military parade. Rumours about the dictator's health swept the Middle East after television pictures of the huge march in Bagdhad suddenly stopped.
"These reports are so silly that they do not even deserve a reply. He fired more than 140 shots one handed, something most young people are unable to do - this alone is enough as a reply to this absurd news," added the Iraqi spokesmullah.
London-based independent opposition spokesman Dr Mowaffak Al-Rubaie said that "unusual" activity had been reported on the streets of Baghdad. "Something unusual has happened but we do not know exactly what has gone on. There has been a heightened security presence on the street. There are more police and military units around."

Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat gave president Clinton his qualified acceptance of a formula for a negotiated settlement with Israel. "It is now up to Mr Barak," a Palestinian representative said. The White House confirmed that "progress" had been made during the talks. Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak warned yesterday of the possibility of all-out war unless Palestinian attacks end.

TOTP 2 A montage of Abba clips to promote Dancing Queen, Steps' 1997 debut for 5-6-7-8 (aired 1998), the n-th airing of Cricket Martian's Livin' La Vida Locust and Macarena are the top and bottom of this week's "party" edition. Only two of these acts featured on Daphne & Celeste's Turkeys on MTV over Christmas.

Jaeda: 10. Person/people you hated the most in 2000: Britney Spears, Christina Agulera
Thereby hangs a silly tale. I'm not happy with my phone at work, as I have to hold it to my ear. Put in for one of those dinky headphone-and-mike thingies, like popstars wear. One of the deluxe models, with little packs to send the conversation without wire, and a battery. Two small packs, worn around my neck. One hanging there, the other a little way to the left. Put a shirt over them, and - bingo! I can have a chest like Birtney's Pears! And what's best, it's just as realistic!

22. New years resolutions you would like to share: find Eminem
Well, if he attempts to fulfil his concert dates in the UK, I shall make sure that that doesn't happen. He will be packed into a wooden crate and sent, post haste, to Dallas, where he will become Jadea and Heather's toy.

Weather: Drizzle for much of the day, though clear and sunny by nightfall. +6.

Travel: Er, fine both ways. Just manage to catch the 1649 from Longbridge, which links to the 1718 to Edinburgh, which gets the 1742 stopper and home by 6.

not the new birtney"You've got to have breasts to be successful." Doctors condemn a mother's plan to give her daughter (right) breast implants as a 16th birthday present. Kay Franklin will pay £5,000 for daughter Jenna to have her breasts surgically enlarged for her birthday this August, saying the operation will improve the girl's quality of life. "I want Jenna to feel confident about the way she looks and if that means having breast implants or having her teeth done or anything else she needs to do, I will support her."
Jenna says she has been longing to have her breasts enlarged since she was 12. "Every other person you see on the television has had implants. You just know Emma Noble, Pamela Anderson, Britney Spears and Demi Moore have had them done and they're so famous. If I want to be successful I need to have them too, and I do want to be successful."
"My mum's had them done, so hopefully implants run in the family. My Dad's all for it, and has no problem with it. He wants me to feel good about myself, as well as look good."
A spokesman for the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons said: "Plastic surgeons are reluctant to operate on anybody under the age of 16. Surgeons may also refer younger patients to a clinical psychologist to ensure that they are emotionally prepared for surgery and there are no underlying psychological problems that they may have about their body."

The Grammy Award nominees. I won't go through all the categories, we'd be here till well after the awards, but a few quick thoughts on the headline categories.

Song of the Year
================
"Beautiful Day"
"Breathe"
"I Hope You Dance"
"I Try"
"Say My Name"
It's going to be a worthy winner, whatever it is. "I Hope You Dance" won the Country music award back in September, "Breathe" was the Billboard #1 for the year, "I Try" my personal #1 for 1999, "Beautiful Day" is a shoo-in for Irish Single of the Year, and any of Destiny's Child's works could have taken a nomination.
Insist I pick a winner... "Breathe."

Record of the year
==================
Destiny's Child for "Say My Name"
'N Sync for "Bye Bye Bye"
Madonna for "Music"
U2 for "Beautiful Day"
Macy Gray for "I Try"
Last year, Bridget pointed out the complete sheer pop-classiness of "Bye Bye Bye," and it's always gratifying to be proven correct. I don't quite get "Music" myself, but it could be something that I need to keep working on.
Pick one: "I Try."

Album of the year
=================
Eminem for "The Marshall Mathers LP"
Beck for "Midnite Vultures"
Radiohead for "Kid A"
Paul Simon for "You're The One"
Steely Dan for "Two Against Nature"
Regular readers will know that I don't care much for Eminem. 'Nuff said. Radiohead's album is a work of genius, I think, but the critics seem more than a little divided on this. Beck is treading his own groove - a fine groove, though very similar to the one he trod in 1996. Steely Dan I've not heard.
Pick: Paul Simon. Be disappointed now, not on the night. The Grammies *love* Paul Simon, and there's not a chance they won't recognise this album as the greatest. Every track (except one) is sheer blowaway class.

Fuel protests are back. The disturbances that came within a whisker of paralysing the UK in September last year have staged an unexpected return, amid accusations retailers were not passing recent cuts in the price of crude oil on to the consumer with enough speed. A group of 30 fuel tax protesters picketed the Manchester Fuels Terminal in Trafford Park. About a dozen protesters assembled at the Shell terminal at Jarrow, south Tyneside. Police said supplies were running as normal, although in Manchester protesters had asked some tanker drivers to turn back from making their deliveries.
Organisers of last year's protests - the same organisers that claimed not to exist last time round - have expressed anger at oil firms' failure to reduce pump prices quickly enough in the face of a falling crude oil price. In Manchester, Paul Ashley said: "It is intended to carry out short, sharp spontaneous guerrilla-style protests at fuel depots across the country," adding that a steady stream of protests would occur in the run-up to the general election. Spontaneous protests that are clearly planned well in advance.

Go quiz! Andrea contributed this.

1. Name: Weaver

2. Nicknames: Ralph (it's a very old Crystal Maze thing,) Cliff Tarantula (after John Culshaw.)

3. How old were you this year? (for most of it): Too old.

4. Best moment of 2000: Can we say, mark town i?

5. Worst moment of 2000: Westlife featured in it, probably.

6. Stalkees of the year: That would be telling.

7. The funniest thing: Two words. CHUMS.

Sidebar. Funniest thing of 2001 so far. Caller at work is chatting to me, when someone knocks on his front door, and he'll call me back shortly. Couple of minutes later, my colleague picks the phone, and isn't the husky-voiced woman caller was speaking to a moment earlier. Now, hang on one cotton-pickin' moment. I may not have the deepest, gruffest voice on the planet. Indeed, I probably sound quite light and melodious. But to confuse me with a woman is... well, something else entirely.

8. The most embarrassing thing this year: Saying that Denmark wouldn't do well at Eurovision, after I'd seen the performance.

9. Person/people you loved/liked the most in 2000: A heck of a lot of people round here.

10. Person/people you hated the most in 2000: Isn't that, like, *so* known?

11. Your favourite word you used this year: Goodbye.

12. Fave TV Show in 2000: (The) Weakest Link, Big Brother, SMTV, Daria, The Tribe, Zero30 / Liquid News.

13. Fave song of 2000: Still "Kryptonite"

14. Fave artist(s) in 2000: obGretchen.

15. Best CD you bought this year: Dido's "No Angel," just ahead of Now 4, Now 5, and "Phantom Power."

16. Worst CD you bought this year: By a very short head, "Fever In Fever Out." Probably because I only bought it in the pre-Christmas clear out and haven't really got to appreciate it yet.

17. Best movie you saw this year: Pass.

18: Best place you went to this year: It's Brighton or bust.

19: Best thing you received this year: Lots of cards. Thanks, y'all. (Especially Jadea, whose Last Millennium Christmas Card finally arrived Tuesday, who I haven't thanked before, and who is at liberty to insert a hyphen wherever she sees fit.)

20. The most money you spent on something this year and what it was: Probably a month's train ticket. This year should see one or two plane tickets, a computer, and (hopefully!) a house.

21. Something you're looking forward to in 2001: All of the above.

22. New years resolutions you would like to share: Post more. You have been warned.

Weather: Frosty start, sunny later. 7.

The cold comes, and generally goes. It's better when well away. Makes me tetchy, and sneezy, and generally yuck.

Jaeda:
I have *the* most disturbing mental picture right now....I'm picturing some extremely british guy (don't ask me why but any time I picture a british guy in my head lately they all look like Madonna's new hubby) prancing around some cubicle laden office in a dresshirt and tie with a headset on screeching "you drive me CRA-ZY" very disconcerting...
Indeed. Maybe not thinking about Mr Madonna, and thinking of (er) a less handsome version of Rupert Giles would be more realistic. Thankfully, I don't work in a cube farm, but a completely open-plan office. And I wouldn't be *screeching* anything. It would be more likely to be a baritone. Oops I. Did it again. To your heart. Gold Blend, anyone?

EEK! Uno problemo...Heather HATES him...well not him personally, just my obsession...
Well, you have a choice. You can either bag him now, or take the risk of letting Daphne & Celeste find him. After that, you stand *no* chance. None whatsoever.

I really need to take pictures of my cubicle at work so you guys can get the full effect of how deep this thing runs...it's a sickness I tell you....
I could recommend a Paul Simon album, administered twice daily, but that wouldn't work. I could Ask Dr Wordsmith, but he's a doctor of words, not of medicine. Any ideas, anyone?

Fending off all-comers, Destiny's Child holds the top spot for a fifth week in total.

One has to feel some sympathy for this number, which has now held at #2 for all five weeks on release. That becomes the longest stay in the runner-up position since All-For-One spent seven weeks at #2 behind Wet Wet Wet's "Love Is All Around" in summer 1994.

Airplay holds firm as all about her falls, allowing Leann to return to the top 5 after a three week gap.

Vocals by Cassandra. This is the first Portugese act to hit the top end of the chart in a very long time, possibly forever. Originally scheduled for release before Christmas, it was pulled owing to a problem with a sample, according to the record company. More cynical minds suggest it had more to do with marketing.

Another Steps single, another slice of fantastic prefab pop. Perhaps not up to the joyful standard of "Stomp," still classy. The hook sounds like something very familiar, perhaps Ace Of Base, but I'm flummoxed as to exactly what it is.
