The Music

Heavy notice: These charts are not intended as any representation of sales or airplay data on any station. They are merely intended as a guide to the most successful records in the UK during this month. Bubblers

Qualification: No top 40 entry in this or any previous month.
Posn SINGLE - act album peak

1 TOO MUCH TOO LITTLE TOO LATE - Silversun   34-3
2 INTERGALACTIC - Beastie Boys   13-2
3 DO FOR LOVE - 2Pac   30-3
4 HEAVEN'S WHAT I FEEL - Gloria Estefan gloria! 33-2
5 HOW DO YOU WANT ME TO LOVE YOU? - 911   22-2
6 TOO CLOSE - Next Too Close 43-0
7 WHISTLE DOWN THE WIND - Tina Arena Whistle down the Wind 33-1
8 SAY IT ONCE - Ultra   25-2
9 SEX AND CANDY - Marcy Playground Marcy Playground 44-0
10 ZORBA'S DANCE - LCD   35-1

Returns from the Beastie Boys - successful, but just too late in the month to make the main list - and Gloria - a flop - join eight relatively young acts. Though Silversun, Next and the computer-generated LCD are the only totally new acts on this list, none of the others has a hit making record of substance. Tina Arena hits with the theme from the latest Loud Webby musical, while boy bands Ultra and 911 confirm their places in the C list.

Recurrent Hits

Qualification: Entry in at least two monthly Top 40s but not this month's.

9 KISS THE RAIN - Billie Meyers Growing Pains 3/98 - #4

A clearout in the upper echelons means this looks like a Greatest Hits of the Year So Far list. Only Shania and the All Saints survive from last month.

Personal Airplay

The ten records I've heard most this month...
Pos SINGLE act heard
1 THREE LIONS '98 Lightning Seeds, Baddiel and Skinner 31
2 DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY Mavericks 29
C'EST LA VIE B*Witched
4 DIVA Dana International 27
5 DREAMS Coors 26
6 STRANDED Lutricia MacNeil 23
7 WHEN Shania Twain 22
8 CARNAVAL DE PARIS Dario G 22
WISHING I WAS THERE WITH YOU Natalie Imbruglia
10 THE BOY IS MINE Brandy and Monica 19

Only the Mavericks and Coors can survive from last month, both with reduced scores. The leading track is a record that wasn't released to radio until June 1, and virtually stopped being played after England's exit from the World Cup on June 30. Natalie Imbruglia places her third different title on the top 10 this year, while Dario G provides the only other UK-based talent in the 10; competing with Ireland's B*Witched and Coors, Israel's Dana International, Canada's Shania Twain and three US acts.
