Weekend 14: April 6-9

Alternative pop group Luscious Jackson has split up amicably after four studio albums for Grand Royal/Capitol. The group's members - Jill Cunniff, Gabby Glaser and Kate Schellenbach - will begin working on a variety of new projects, including collaborating with other artists and recording material for soundtracks. "We want to let our fans know that we are still good friends," Cunniff said in a statement. "We all want to diversify what we do individually and the band just came to its natural conclusion. It's been a great eight years and we hope to work together again in the future." "We want to thank our fans for their amazing support over the years," added Schellenbach, "as well as the people who supported and worked for us and with us personally and professionally all this time."
Original member Vivian Trimble left Luscious Jackson in April 1998 to pursue other projects. In 1996, she and Cunniff released the Grand Royal album Klassics With A K under the name Kostars. Dusty Trails, Trimble's new group with former Breeders bassist Josephine Wiggs, will release its self-titled debut album May 9 on Atlantic. As recently as this month, the band played US tour dates with Smash Mouth in support of its fourth album, Electric Honey, which peaked at No. 102 on The Billboard 200.

Eternal, the British soul act that has been dropping members for the past years, has been dropped by EMI. Originally a four-piece, Eternal lost Louise Nurding in 1995 after their Power of a Woman album. Kelly Bryant left before last year's Eternal Songs album, released as a project by Kellie and Esther Bennet. After the album stiffed at #76, though, Eternal got their marching orders.

The MuchMusic Countdown is still led by N'Sync's Bye Bye Bye, with Otherside and Forget About Dre climbing into the top 3. S Club 7 slips to 4, with Maria Maria and I Try climbing four to 5 and 6 respectively. Top ten entries for Sonique It Feels So Good 13-8, Hanson This Time Around 12-9 and Destiny's Child Say My Name 18-10. Other climbs include Pink, 17-12; Smashing Pumpkins, 23-18, Sisqo 26-20. New entries for Enrique's Be With You 25 and Aqua's Around The World 26.

Enrique Iglesias hits the top of the MuchMoreMusic Countdown, ahead of I Try and American Pie. Sonique climbs to 4, Damhait Doyle to 6, Chantal to 7 and Jann Arden's Sleepless moves 12-8. Sting is 9. Savage Garden climbs 16-12, Toni Braxton 23-19, Marc Anthony 26-21, Edwin 29-24. Two new entries: Broadway from the Goo Goo Dolls at 28, and The Jeff Healey Band I Tried at 29.

In spite of a sharp drop in sales, 'N Sync's No Strings Attached still sold 811,000 in its second week of release. The album, which lost 66% of its record-shattering first week sales, retained the #1 spot in the US. Santana's Supernatural stayed at #2 on 212,000 copies, while the soundtrack to Romeo Must Die debuted at #3, moving 203,000. Rapper Drag-On debuts at #5 with Opposite Of H2O. Two former members of rap group NWA hold down the #6 and #7 slots, with Dr Dre's Dr Dre 2001 and Ice Cube's War & Peace Vol 2 (The Peace Disc).
The rest of the top 10: Sisqo's Unleash The Dragon at #4; Destiny's Child's The Writing's On The Wall down one slot to #8; Macy Gray's On How Life Is falling two to #9; and DMX's ... And Then There Was X up two at #10.
Other top debuts this week include Common's Like Water for Chocolate at #16, country star Trisha Yearwood's Real Live Woman at #27, and ska-punk band Goldfinger's Stomping Ground at #109.
For the second consecutive week, Jay-Z's Vol 3 ... Life And Times Of S Carter is the fastest growing album at retail, up five positions to #23, while the soundtrack to Magnolia shows the largest percentage growth in sales, rocketing from #138 to #100.

On The Hot 100, the top 10 is largely unchanged. Santana's Maria Maria is #1 for a second week, as it is on R&B Singles And Tracks. At #6, Sisqo's Thong Song shows the largest growth at radio, while Mary Mary's Shackles (Praise You) enjoys the largest sales gain, moving 72-54. Macy Gray's I Try climbs 12-8, and Sonique's It Feels So Good reaches a new peak, climbing 13-11.

Christina Aguilera's new single I Turn To You is the chart's top debut this week at #50. Other top entries include a #54 debut for 504 Boyz' Wobble Wobble, which takes the top slot on Hot Rap Singles chart with a 50-1 jump. LFO's latest single I Don't Wanna Kiss You Goodnight opens at #63, Clay Walker's The Chain Of Love comes in at #73, and Vitamin C's Graduation (Friends Forever) debuts at #81.

#2 - Mel C & Lisa Lopez - Never Be The Same Again
 Repeat of last week's.
#16- B*Witched - Jump Down
Less denim than before, and something of an identikit performance.
#3 - Destiny's Child - Say My Name
Silly jiggling during the chorus ruins it as a spectacle.
#4 - Moloko - The Time Is Now
Back in the studio, but a familiar sight.
#6 - Atomic Kitten - See Ya!
Singing live, singing flat, looking silly, but full marks for
 actually trying.
#23- Idlewild - Actually, It's Darkness
A belated debut for a band reminiscent of the Stone Roses or
 Inspiral Carpets. Live singing.
#5 - Santana sans Rob Thomas - Smooth
*Fourth* outing for this clip. And *still* no Rob.
#1 - Westlife - Fooled Again
Sitting on chairs for a dull, dull show. Camerawork doesn't hide
the sparse crowd.

The CIN UK Sales Chart will get a sponsor in May. The chart, established in 1952, will be sponsored by worldpop.com, a website that already sponsors a segment on ITV's pop show cd:uk. The site will also be plugged on Radio 1's three-hour weekly show and television show Top of the Pops. Part-owner Peter Powell made some statement but didn't refer to his previous incarnation on Radio 1.

Rage Against The Machine declared the police boycott against the band a "complete failure." The boycott stems from the group's support of death row inmate Mumia Abu-Jamal, convicted of killing a Philadelphia police officer in 1981. Guitarist Tom Morello said that the largest police organisation in the country proved ineffective in its attempts at several tour stops across the country to counter Rage's stance in support of Abu-Jamal, who the band believes is innocent.
"This police organisation is trying to tell you what music is acceptable for you - what concerts are acceptable for you and what ideas are acceptable for you to be exposed to. The reason why they called a boycott of Rage is not because they're afraid of us, but because they're afraid of you, because the more you know the more dangerous you are. I think that you know a lot already, because despite the boycott, our shows sold out, our record went to #1 and we won a shitload of California Music Awards tonight."

Scottish rockers Travis are doing so well in the US that fans won't let them leave the country. The group, opening for Oasis through early May, will remain in the States for an 8-date club tour set to begin May 7 in Carrboro, NC, and wind up May 18 at the tiny Grog Shop in Cleveland. MCA recording artist Leona Naess, who just released her debut album Comatised, will join Travis on the new dates. Travis is touring in support of its sophomore album The Man Who, a smash hit across Europe that was released April 4 in the US.

Otherside tops the MuchMusic Countdown for the Red Hot Chili Peppers, ahead of Dr Dre and N'Sync. Santana and Macy gray climb single places to round out the five. Sonique makes 6, S Club 7 slips to 9, and Pink's There You Go climbs into the 10. A big climb for Sisqo's Thong Song, 20-14, and Enrique's Be With You 25-20. New for the Bloodhound Gang The Bad Touch 24, Aggie I Turn to You 27 and Birtney Oops I Did It Again 29.

I Try is the MuchMoreMusic Countdown leader, with American Pie and It Feels So Good climbing single spots just behind. Savage Garden's Crash and Burn and J Gaines' Better Man enter the top 10, with Meja's Private Emotion moving 15-11. Sting slips to 14, Toni Braxton climbs 19-15, Marc Anthony 21-16. New entries for Tracy Chapman Telling Stories 26 and Tina Turner Whatever You Need 29.

Teen superstars 'N Sync's album No Strings Attached is still making retailers smile, selling 533,000 units. The album remains #1 in the US. 'N Sync held off Santana once again, despite Supernatural selling another 186,000 copies. Landing at #3 is late rapper Big Punisher's posthumous album Yeeeah Baby, which sold 179,000 units in its first week. Big Punisher, whose real name was Christopher Rios, died Feb 7 of an apparent heart attack. Yeeeah Baby also debuts at #1 on Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

Following Big Punisher, the top debut this week is from Flipmode Squad rapper Rah Digga's solo debut Dirty Harriet, which opened at #18; #3 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. Pink's Can't Take Me Home debuts at #26, while Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble's Blues At Sunrise lands at #80. Travis bows at #138 with their sophomore set The Man Who, while veteran rocker Lou Reed debuts at #183 with his latest Reprise album Ecstasy.

3 Doors Down's The Better Life, driven by the #1 Mainstream Rock Tracks chart single Kryptonite, is the album chart's fastest growing album at retail. Oasis' Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants shows the highest percentage growth in sales, rocketing from #183 to #110 as the group begins a US tour in support of the album. Lead mumbler Liam Gallagher dismissed the album as "poor" and "not his group's best" in interviews this week.

The top 10 singles remain largely unchanged. Santana's Maria Maria is #1 for a third week, as it is on Billboard's Hot R&B Singles chart. The new top 10 entries are Sonique's It Feels So Good, up three rungs to #8, and Vertical Horizon's Everything You Want, which shoots from #13 to #9. Sonique's top ten entry marks the first single by a British act to get this high since All Saints' Never Ever in September 1998.

Hanson's new single This Time Around is the chart's top debut at #22, while Elton John's Someday Out Of The Blue opens at #56. Britney Spears' Oops! ... I Did It Again debuts at #67, while Jay-Z's new single Big Pimpin' featuring UGK bows at #69.

At #23, Enrique Iglesias' Be With You shows the largest growth at radio, and 504 Boyz' Wobble Wobble enjoys the largest sales gain, moving 57-34. Wobble Wobble is #1 for the second week on Billboard's Hot Rap Singles chart. George Strait's The Best Day leads the Country countdown, while a former country leader, Faith Hill's Breathe, takes over atop the AC chart.
