Monica Lewinsky returns to Washington to face questioning by House impeachment managers and lawyers for President Clinton. The former White House intern checks into the Mayflower Hotel shortly after her flight from Los Angeles arrived at Dulles Airport. Crowds gather at the hotel's front door, forming a path through which she entered.

Manchester United hit the top of the Premier League after beating sometime (well, mid-August) leaders Charlton 1-0. They depose Chelsea, who drew 0-0 with Arsenal.

Yevgeny Kafelnikov beats Stefan Edberg 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-6. It's his second Grand Slam, added to the 1996 French Open.

 

Saturday, 30 January

Cape Breton miners, angered by a federal plan to dismantle the region’s coal industry, hurl catcalls and jeers at Nova Scotia’s premier, demanding he improve compensation for their hard-luck island. About 350 miners and their family members fill a firehall with boos and shouts of "lies" and "vote him out" as Russell MacLellan made his first public statements since Ottawa announced it would dismantle the Cape Breton Development Corp.

A settlement between Louise Woodward and the family who sued her for the wrongful death of the eight-month-old boy in her care prevents the former British au pair from profiting from selling her story. "The goal of this case is what it was from the beginning, that Louise Woodward would not become a millionaire," according to Fredric Ellis, the lawyer for Sunil and Deborah Eappen. "The goal of this lawsuit was to use the civil justice system to accomplish something the criminal justice system couldn’t."

Ulster win the Rugby European Cup, beating French side Colombiers 21-6. In the four years of the contest, French and Irish sides have one win from four entries; the other two sides have been won by English sides in their two entries.

Aston Villa miss their chance to hit the top of the Premier League, going down 2-1 to Newcastle - leaders Chelsea play tomorrow. Man Utd draw 0-0 at Wimbledon. In the first division, leaders Sunderland go down 2-1 at second placed Watford.

The six-nation Contact Group demands that Kosovo's warring factions stop fighting and attend peace talks in France within a week to hammer out a political solution for the troubled Serbian province. Foreign Secretary Robin Cook said the negotiations will not last longer than "three weeks at the most" and should include "elements for a substantial autonomy for Kosovo," where ethnic Albanian rebels have been waging an armed campaign for secession.

Prince Chuck and Camilla Parker Horse make their first public appearance together in a blitz of photo flashes and clicking cameras, giving Britain’s photographers the picture they’ve been seeking for years. Television footage of the event is banned from screens over fears it will set off epileptic fits, further demonstrating the contempt the pair show the populace.

Jaromir Jagr runs his NHL-leading scoring streak to 13 games with a short-handed goal and three assists as the Penguins, losers of five of six, beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 6-0.

Thursday, 28 January

Colombian President Andres Pastrana orders a military crackdown in his earthquake-torn city after a day of looting and rioting by survivors of the tremor that killed at least 883 people. Pastrana flew into Armenia Wednesday vowing to impose order and speed up relief to about 250,000 people left homeless by the quake. 2,000 soldiers and 700 police would be brought in to control gangs of looters still roaming the streets.

Indonesia is willing to grant independence to East Timor. It annexed the Portuguese island territory 23 years ago. Although met cautiously by East Timor activists, the statement is a major reversal in Indonesia’s stance on the territory, where it has faced years of fighting with rebels.

Chennai, 1st Test Pakistan 238 (Moin Khan 60, Youhana 53, Kumble 6/70) India 48/0 (Ramesh 30*) India trail by 190 with all first innings wickets in hand. India have by far the best of the first day in what must be the most eagerly anticipated sporting event of the year. It's the first Test series between the two neighbours since 1989.

Lindsay Davenport is unceremoniously dumped from the Australian open by Amelie Mauresmo, 4-6, 7-5, 7-5. She joins Martina Hingis who inflicted Monica Seles' first defeat in five entried down under, 4&4. Thomas Enquist will contest the men's event, after ending the challenge of Nick Lapentti 3-5-1.

 

Wednesday, 27 January

Senators vote to call three witnesses in the continuing Clinton trial. Monica Lewinsky, Vernon Currie and Sidney Blumenthal will be deposed by members of the US upper house. There's no speaking with secretary Linda Tripp, who may hold the key to the truth.

The New Jersey Devils finally find a way to beat the Ottawa Senators. Chris Terreri stops 24 shots in making an unexpected start and the Devils get goals from four players in defeating the Senators 4-1. The win was the first in four games against Ottawa this season and ends a four-game losing streak against the Senators dating to last season. Wayne Gretzky gets three assists as the New York Rangers’ beat the Washington Capitals 4-1.

In Australia, Monica Seles downs Steffi Graf 7&1, Martina Hingis overcomes Mary Pierce 3&4. Tommy Haas downs Vince Spadea in straight sets, 6-5-3, while Yevgeny Kafelnikov ousts Todd Martin 2-6-2.

Durban (ODI 3/7) South Africa 274/9 (Klusener 64, Cronje 58, Hooper 4/52) West Indies 219 off 43.1 overs (Chanderpaul 52, Extras 36, Kallis 3/24) South Africa win by 55 runs and lead the series 2-1.

 

Tuesday, 26 January

The Catholic Archbishop of Cardiff is arrested by London Police. He's charged in connection with serious sexual assaults in the 1960s.

Within hours of the federal government and the provinces saying a health accord was within reach, Quebec blows out the talks saying they won’t sign the deal that would release more money for health care. A Quebec source says signing the deal would be a surrender of the province’s autonomy on health policy. "Every Quebec premier since Maurice Duplessis has rejected any federal role in health."

US warplanes attack five targets in northern Iraq’s no-fly zone Tuesday after being fired on by Iraqi forces, claims the US Defence Department. Two F15E fighter jets drop bombs after being targeted by Iraqi anti-aircraft artillery systems near Mosul in northern Iraq. Earlier, US jets attacked two other radar sites and an anti-aircraft system near Mosul after being fired on.

Lindsay Davenport and Anne Mauresmo advance to the semi-finals of the Australian Open. Davenport, the world #1, overcomes Venus Williams 4&0, while Mauresmo shocks the 11th seed Dominique Van Roost 3&6. In the men's event, Thomas Enqvist beats Marc Rosset in straight sets, while Ecuador's Nicholas Lapentti downs 7th seed Karol Kuchera 8-6 in the final set. Only one seed will make the semis.

Monday, 25 January

Chaotic scenes in the Senate as the impeachment hearings stall after just a few moments over procedural wrangles. After resumption, the Senate faces debate on just one motion. The one to end President Clinton's impeachment trial with dismissal of the charges was pulled after cross-party talks during the morning; the one to debate could prolong it indefinitely by calling witnesses such as M Lewinsky.

The official Iraqi News Agency reports a US-British missile strike hits a crowded area in the southern city of Basra, killing and wounding an unknown number of civilians. The report says a missile hit the al-Jumhuriya section of the city at 9:30 am. Several houses are destroyed in the strike, according to IRNA.

Wayne Gretzky put on a show in what might be his last NHL all-star game, leading North America to an 8-6 victory over the World team. The New York Rangers centre has rewritten the NHL record book over his 20-year career. He has a goal and two assists in the victory, then says he will keep the car he got for being named player of the game.

 

Sunday, 24 January

Mrs and Mr Blair complain about a press report over where their daughter will be schooling. A clipping in the Mail on Sunday reports that local parents were denied for Kathryn Blair to attend the Sacred Heart in Hammersmith, some miles from her Westminster home. The Mail is expected to point out that the Blairs' actions go against Labour party policy, and the matter is of public concern.

Manchester United and Arsenal progress in the FA Cup, both by 2-1 scorelines. Manchester leave it late to beat Liverpool, scoring both their strikes in the last three minutes. Arsenal are always in control of a tense match against Wolverhampton.

 

Saturday, 23 January

One of Bill Clinton's toughest critics within the Democratic Party will put forward a plan Monday that would bring an early end to the presidential impeachment trial. Influential West Virginia Senator Robert Byrd says he will offer a motion to dismiss the impeachment trial on the basis it was unlikely the necessary votes against the President could be secured.

Fulham have the upset of FA Cup R4, ousting league leaders Aston Villa 2-0 in a match they totally dominated. Leeds beat Cardiff 5-1. Coventry overcome Leicester 2-0. Bristol Rovers overcome Leyton Orient 3-0. Wimbledon and Spurs draw 1-1; after their meeting in the league last week, and two meetings in the League Cup to come, they'll play five of seven games against each other. Newcastle better Bradford, Sheff W overcome Stockport, and Blackburn run out 1-0 over Sunderland, Derby beat Swansea by the same margin.

In Scotland, Rangers creep past Stenhousemuir 2-0. Livingstone oust Aberdeen 1-0. Celtic strike late to beat Airdrie 3-1, but Stirling hang on to hold Hibs 1-1. Ayr better Kilmarnock 3-0.

Friday, 22 January

Mobs of striking coal miners storm police lines in Romania, attacking riot troops with clubs and homemade explosives, and taking dozens of policemen hostage. 40 people are injured and up to 50 police kidnapped in the fierce assault as 7000 miners over-run government roadblocks thrown up to bar them from their march on Bucharest.

Thursday, 21 January

A new report suggests that the Peggy's Cove crash last year followed a disagreement between the pilot and co-pilot over whether to land straight away. The accident happened a few minutes after the plane's ovens were switched on to heat the passengers' meals.

An RAF jet and a Cessna collide over Nottinghamshire killing all four aboard.

The NBA lockout is officially settled. Teams can begin signing players, making trades and opening training camps. Teams can immediately begin talking to their players, something forbidden since commissioner David Stern and union director Billy Hunter agreed two weeks ago on the terms of a new collective bargaining agreement.

The accused in the impeachment trial turns up before the jury, but President Clinton stays away from the sex-and-cover-up charges he faces and aims his appeal to stay in office squarely over the Senate's head. Five hours after senators hear Clinton’s legal defence, those same legislators are in the awkward position of cheerleaders as they listened to him make his case with a voter-friendly State of the Union speech.

"TeleChobis," Mexican broadcaster TV Azteca's look-alike answer to the hit kid's show "Teletubbies," is being sued by Ragdoll, the original's producer, and its US distributor. The lawsuit seeks the removal of "TeleChobis" from Azteca's daily slate and an unspecified sum in legal costs and damages. "We tried to avoid litigation by asking Azteca to take the show off the air," says distributor David Levinee.

Tear it down, burn it or maybe even bomb it. The verdict from many Montrealers is decisive - the city’s troubled Olympic Stadium should be put out of its misery. Where they differ is on the demolition method. "I said years ago they should scrap it and build a new one," says Will Jones, a futures trader at the Montreal Exchange.

Paddy Ashdown will retire as head of the Liberal Democrats in June. He will have been leader of the party for 11 years, and has turned the party from a 7% failure to their largest representation in the Commons since the war.

Ozone loss over the Arctic was not as great last year as previously but it’s too soon to declare a definite trend, according to Georg Hansen of the Norwegian Institute for Air Research in Tromso, Norway.

The Philippines Supreme Court scraps its restraining order on the execution of a convicted child rapist. The controversial execution would be the nation's first in 23 years. The court votes 11-2 with two judges abstaining to lift the January 4 order postponing the execution of a man convicted of repeatedly raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter.

Part of Montréal's Olympic Stadium’s roof caves in as 200 workers were setting up for a car show. An avalanche of snow tumbles down injuring five. "If I had been at my booth, I would be dead." says 28-year-old Todd Joel, working inside at the stadium at the time."It was bloody scary."

The Ottawa Senators' streak is over. The Hottest Team in the NHL is embarrassed by the previous Hottest Team in the NHL as Ottawa is shut out 5-0 by the Philadelphia Flyers on Monday night, ending their 11-game unbeaten streak. The Flyers’ 15-game unbeaten streak was broken by Toronto on Saturday. "We wanted to get right back on the horse," comments Flyers goalie John Vanbiesbrouck. "And we did."

Monday, 18 January

Yugoslavia throws out the UN's Chief Inspector, and refuses entry to the head of the International War Crimes Tribunal. These actions can only alienate the Belgrade regime further from the international community.

Centurion Park (day 4) West Indies 217 (Jacobs 78, Chanderpaul 43, Adams 4/64) South Africa win by 351 runs and win the series 5-0. It's the first 5-0 victory in the team's history, and the first since the West Indies thumped England at home in 1986.

NATO holds an emergency meeting to discuss a response to the massacre of dozens of civilians in Serbia's rebel province of Kosovo. International monitors accuse Yugoslav forces of murdering dozens of villagers in the southern part of Kosovo, where ethnic Albanians far outnumber Serbs. Observers from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe counted 45 bodies. Some had been mutilated.

Another six foreigners are abducted in the Yemen. The tourists - four Dutch and two British - are captured in the north of the country. The kidnappings, the latest in a recent series, may be connected with the detention by Yemeni officials of six foreigners on terrorism charges.
