Eye on the Boy

(l'oeil est sur le garçon)

On June 12, 1997, I came home from the hospital with a helpless, tiny baby.

Where is that baby now? What I have instead is this toddler cruisin' around here who looks vaguely like that infant. I'm pretty sure I've been the victim of a bait-and-switch scheme.

Month of March

Who in the heck was I trying to kid? Did I really think I could keep up week-by-week with a nine month old toddler? Yes indeed, toddler. Needless to say the baby gate did in fact go up, after a scare on the stairs one morning. And locks on the cabinet doors. And move all tempting goodies (remotes, wires, phones) up one more level.

The rave toy this month is a huge (Kennedy-sized) ball, which is great practice for standing up. What balance! And climbing has become the new game. Climbing on anything. On the couch, over dad -- all the while eyeing up the baby gate (time to grease the gate posts!)

3rd foods (with chunky chunks) were interesting for a day or two, but Kennedy quickly came to the conclusion that no meal is worth fighting over -- he'd pretty much just rather eat. Finger foods, however, offer new fun almost daily! Teething biscuits are OK, but make quite the mess (how he gets it in his hair I'll never know). Cheerios are fun, though. You'd be surprised how quickly a baby can learn finger dexterity when there's food involved!

Fourth week of February

Teeth three and four arrived this week, along with quite a bit of fussiness. It's not really a happy baby time 'round our parts, so if you were planning a visit, bring your earplugs. Also, if you're an insomniac, come on over! Nobody sleeps over here this week…

Third week of February

Well it looks like Kennedy has decided to crawl after all. He must have heard the cliché about "you have to crawl before you can walk." Of course, crawling is only fun to get to places he's not supposed to be, like under the coffee table and near the fireplace. Oh well, looks like it's time for baby gates. L

Second week of February

Okay, I think we're just about done with the baby bouncer-recliner. The new fun game is to rip off the velcro straps, turn over, and bounce up & down on hands and knees. Oh and give mommy a heart attack.

First week of February

Still haven't quite crawled or sat up unaided. But boy can we ever stand up! Today Kennedy pulled himself right up from a crouch-sit to full standing against the couch. Luckily for me he wasn't wearing his running shoes.

Third week of January

"guhhh" seems to have gotten old. We've now moved on to making up our own sounds. Most common is a very distinct and articulated "bwa bwa". Depending on the mood (Mommy's or baby's?) it can sound like anything from "baby" to "mama" to "bottle".

First week of January

No more dinners in the bouncy recliner. We've graduated to the high chair full time! What fun! Now, instead of eating, Kennedy can bang his hands on the tray and drop spoons on the floor!

Last week of December (1997)

Kennedy's discovered the art of imitating noises. Daddy went "guhhhh", and Kennedy looked right back at him, saw his "guhhh" and raised him one.
