John Smee

It is with sincere sorrow that the many friends of John Smee
learned of his death, which occured on the 6th. inst. at his
home in Carrol township near Shermansdale. His death was the
result of a sroke of paralysis.
John Smee was born in this county March 4, 1835, and was the son
of John and Elizabeth (Souders) Smee. He attended the common
schools and learned the carpentering trade with Jacob Smee.
And afterwards bacame his partner. On August 17, 1863 Mr. Smee
enlisted as a soldier, and as assigned to company G, 149th Penna.
Volunteers. He served until the close of the war and was discharged at
Alexandris, Va, June 24, 1865. While in the service
Mr. Smee took part in ten battles. He was with General Grant's
and in the thirty day campaign from the Wilderness to Cold
Harbor. In the 1 st. battle of the Wilderness he was struck by a
bullet, and in the engagement at Laurel Hill he was wounded by a
shell. He was in the terrible fights at Spottaylvania, North Anna
River, Cold Harbor, Weldon Railroad, and in first at Petersburg.
After the close of the war Mr. Smee returned home and worked at
his trade until a few years ago, when he engaged in farming.
In political faith Mr. Smee was a ardent Democrat and took an
active interest in his party's cause. He was a member of John
Jones Post, No. 418, G.A.R., of this place.
Mr Smee was married January 2, 1862, to Elizabeth, daughter of
Jacob and Mary Shatto. Their children are: Jacob W., John W.,
and George M.
By the death of Mr. Smee the county loses one of its best and
most useful citizen. He was a man of strict integrity, a brave
soldier, a loyal friend, and a kind husband and father. His
lost is keenly felt not only in his own community but through-
out the county.
