Lines Found On The Back Of A Quilt

Scraps that are sombre and scraps that are gay
Colours in contrats and shapes that are queer
Silk, satin, velvet, and plush are all here.
Demented fancy in gorgeous array
Rivals the rainbow in brilliant display
Such are the quilts we call "crazy" today.

The World is itself but a Crazy Quilt rare
Extremes and odd natures all fitted with care.
Man is a scrap of complacent conceit,
Woman a scrap of true tenderness sweet.
Some are like satin, the gloss is outside.
Some are like velvet, right royal in pride.
Some are like plush, soft and easy to guide.

Life is a patchwork of smiles and of tears,
Piece added to piece by the untiring years,
The yellow is sunshine, the purple is shade:
Of shadow and sunshine is the experience made.
The reds and the blues are joys' tints gay,
Sin, sorrow, and pain are maroon, brown and gray.
Each brightens with contrast our earthly pathway.

Embroidered designs which make the quilt gay
Are pleasures and duties we find on our way
Hope, love, and kisses are stitches so bright
Which decorate life with gleams delight
While sympathy sweet is the lining to hold
The odd scraps of Fate which we cannot control.
We are better than Patwork because of the soul.
