"True Love's the gift which God has given to man alone beneath heaven." Sir Walter Scott

  A Red, Red Rose

O my luve is like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June.
O, my luve is like the melodie,
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

As fair art thou, my bonnie lass.
So deep in luve am I,
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun!
And I will love thee still, my dear,
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare thee weel, my only luve,
And fare thee weel a while!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho it were ten thousand mile!

Robert Burns (1759-96)

Robert Burns is one of my favorite Scottish Poets. The above poem is my favorite. I have also heard it sung, (one version of which is playing here) and it is beautiful. I also used his poem, "My Heart's in the Highlands" on my intro page. To learn more about Robert Burns click on the link above or visit The Songs of Robert Burns .

I found the words to "Red, Red Rose" in a book I recently acquired, Scottish Love Poems, A Personal Anthology, by Antonia Fraser . It is an excellent book, filled with poems on one of my favorite subjects, love.
