The mini-series "Noah's Ark" which NBC aired on May 2 and 3 was a great disappointment. Had the producers stuck to the Genesis account, it could have been excellent. Besides being grossly off track from the biblical record, it was generally lacking in quality. I had the following issues with the show:
- According to the Bible, Lamech was Noah's father and he died just before the flood came. The TV show mentioned nothing of Lamech and misleadingly portrayed Noah as not having been brought up in a God-fearing family. When asked about God on the show, Noah displays amazing ignorance.
- There is no biblical basis to believe that Sodom and Gomorrah existed prior to the flood. The show attempts to combine two separate stories (Noah and Lot) and incorrectly portrays Lot as being corrupt. It even has Lot being Noah's cousin! From the post-deluge time of Abraham, it borrows the story of Lot escaping Sodom with his wife and her instant transformation into a pillar of salt when looking back at the destruction. Noah wasn't even alive when this occurred.
- Nothing is shown of the nephillim (fallen angels who inter-bred with humans). According to the Bible, "There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown." The human gene pool had been compromised (perhaps a diabolical plot to eliminate the future Messiah - Jesus), but "Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations." Besides being a just man, it seems that the genealogy of Noah was one of the few, if not the only pure human lines remaining. This is the key to understanding why God would completely destroy the inhabitants of the earth, including children. Those destroyed by the flood were unredeemable. It's likely that the myths of the Greek gods were derived from the nephillim and perhaps the legends of grotesque human-animal hybrids.
- The time spent building the ark can be calculated from the Bible to be 120 years. The TV show makes it seem that it was practically overnight and that God provided a ready-to-assemble kit.
- Genesis states that Noah, his family and the animals entered the ark 7 days prior to the floodwaters. The TV version has them floating on rafts toward the open door.
- Genesis states that God shut them in. Hollywood leaves that to Noah and his sons.
- The Bible says that Noah and his wife, his sons and their wives entered the ark. The producers of the show missed this little detail and then have Noah trying to keep his sons away from their girlfriends.
- No one besides the eight on the ark (and the animals) survived the forty days of catastrophic flooding. The ridiculous story line of the TV show has many survivors paddling crude ships.
- The TV show makes a mockery of God when He tells Noah that he doesn't want to make the same mistake twice. God didn't make a mistake in creating mankind. The Bible just says that he was sorry that He had made them. This does not imply a mistake on God's part, but on man's.
- On the show, Noah's sons are concerned about whether or not they are travelling in circles and wish to build a crude rudder. What does it matter? The whole world is under water! Where would the producers have us believe they are trying to travel?
